About Matt Cates

Matt Cates began his radio career in the 1970s, at the now-defunct KUSN in his hometown of Saint Joseph, MO. The station was going out of business at the time of his hiring. As one-by-one the staff "jumped ship," and despite his lack of formal broadcast training, he gradually took on the positions of Disk Jockey, Production Director, Talk Show host, and News Director. He then went on to another hometown station, KKJO, where he polished his production skills -- often voicing all the roles in a single project via multi-tracking and overdubbing -- and hosted the station's morning public affairs program, "Open Line."

In 1982, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continued his work in radio production and on-air programs well into the 1990s. His last regular broadcast position was as News Director of KKIS, Concord, California.

While at KKIS, Cates began doing independent voice-over work, and has since utilized his many character voices in many nationally-aired radio & TV commercials, as well as multimedia software. He provided the voice of the Robot Pilot on "Deep Earth Exploration," a motion-sim dark ride at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park.

He has made rare film appearances, most notably in the short "Saint Agnes' Eve," which he also narrated. He can be seen briefly in the Will Smith film, "The Pursuit of Happyness."

Matt appears in the 2008 edition of "Marquis' Who's Who in America."
