Experts - editors, book doctors, indexers, translators, - for publishing listed in the Tool Shed in Cat's-paw Press's Backyard
dabblingcat From the Tool Shed

How Do I Find Who Can...?

THE SPECIALISTS AND EXPERTS

As touched on in THE Prepublishing Handbook--What you should know BEFORE you publish your first book, a new publisher can, with study and good models, perform some of the necessary tasks personally. For this reason, the Tool Shed also includes articles by experts on how to do; how to create a business plan, how to develop a promotional campaign, etc. But sometimes these tasks are beyond a person's current level, or perhaps the time constraints call for outside help.

A big problem for neophyte publishers is finding who can provide the services needed in producing a good product. The specialists listed below have been identified by other publishers as worth noting. Disclaimer: Cat's-paw Press cannot vouch for the reliability or price of the services; the Tool Shed itself is a service from Cat's-paw Press where we firmly believe in assisting neophyte publishers compete as strongly as possible in a sometimes daunting environment. This section of the Tool Shed is devoted to the experts who deal with the life of a book's manuscript, most specifically editors, indexers and translators; for publicists and promotional information, go to the Promotion and Publicity room; to find designers of various sorts, go to the Designers section. Likewise, for experts in the production arena -- printing, prepress and the like, go to Production Issues room. For copyright and other legal questions, visit Copyright Information

Freelance Help is another great site for additional sources of experts; not only does it link to this site but also to others of interest to publishers.

EDITORS and TEXT EXPERTS

One of the greatest benefit an author can give to a book is to have it properly, professionally, thoroughly edited. In her newsletter early in 2001, Chris Roerden had these words of advice. She has kindly given permission for them to be posted here. Read, enjoy, heed.

How to spend more on editing and make it take longer
  • Never read over what you write before sending it for an edit. (Recommended: Either talk to an editor before you begin a nonfiction book, or, when you complete your writing, put it aside, then revise, repeating the process until your eyes glaze over, and then have it professionally edited.)
  • Submit chapters as you happen to finish them. (See above recommendation.)
  • Be sure to send a diskette or e-mail attachment in an incompatible format. Even better, send a file that crashes the editor's hard drive. (Recommended: Discuss formats in advance and send a sample file to test compatibility.)
  • Keep revising your copy while the editing is occurring, or start and stop your editor's work as your commitment fluctuates. (Recommended: Establish a timeline and budget, seek advice on its feasibility, and stick to it.)
  • Do one-stop shopping for editing through a company that subcontracts to an editor who makes a living subcontracting to novices you don't know, each taking a percentage of the fee. (Recommended: Hire a professional you can work with directly whose only job is editing books.)
  • Decide to self-publish with a firm that specializes in publishing for others. (Recommended: Take the time to check all options and follow up all referrals.)
  • Have an artist-friend or your brochure designer prepare your book cover. (Recommended: Hire a professional book cover designer. It's worth the cost.)
  • Rewrite big-time after your book's pages are laid out. (Recommended: Do all your rewriting and get it edited before typesetting and composition.)
  • Finally, after your editor is finished, decide to broaden your market and use a different method of distribution than you'd originally specified to your editor. (Recommended: Thoroughly research and establish your book marketing and distribution plan before you even begin to write.)

Thanks, Chris!

*********************************

A basic question that neophytes raise has to do with terminology. You'll hear "substantive editing" and "copy editing"; you'll hear "line editing" and "production editing." The Editors' Association of Canada gives a detailed description of the various tasks.

The following list was developed from references by members of the now-defunct PMA-Listserv and the Bookmarket list, as well as from personal acquaintance.

One of Minnesota's major industries is publishing; the large number of small to mid-sized presses has made it an attractive place for free-lance editors. PEN is an association of free-lance editors, with some indexers and proofreaders a part of the group. The Cat has often used their print directory to point interested people to the "right" editor, and happily that directory is now on-line at their web site. You can find other goodies there, too.

Having a degree in English is mostly good for teaching how to write English papers. It doesn't necessarily make a good editor. The best editor for you is one who has been trained to edit the type of material you are publishing. In most cases, this means the editor will have worked full-time at some point in his or her career in a position where their work was supervised and guided. At the very least, it should mean that they have done a great deal of free-lance editing involving your same type of material. Fiction editors aren't necessarily the best choice to edit science texts, etc.

Earlier, this item noted the Freelancers Editorial Association;please note that it has merged and is now a part of the Editorial Freelancers Association.

The Editorial Freelancers Association is a good place to look for an editor, but you have to remember you will probably get a list of people who cared enough about editing to pay their dues. It's still up to you to check them out.

What Will It Cost?

To get an idea of what it will cost to have your work edited, the Editorial Freelancers Association posted a Fee and Scheduling Guidelines on their web site that will be helpful in forecasting costs of getting a manuscript ready to go into production. This is not the rates survey of EFA members; it is the EFA's suggested rate standards. These rates are only suggested standards, and in practice will vary widely. Most trade publishers, for example, are not willing to pay the higher rates that corporate clients might.

The Cat was also apprised of the actual survey results of writing and editing rates, as reported by National Writers Union members. This survey is much more detailed than EFA's suggested rates and is categorized by field of work (business/technical/electronic, books, magazines, etc.) and type of work done (various kinds of writing, editing, proofreading, design, etc.). It should be remembered that freelancers often are willing to negotiate and that small publishers shouldn't be afraid to be upfront about their needs and means.

For a broader, industry-side view, check out the Brenner Information Group, which specializes in pricing guides, pricing tables, hourly rates and real prices.)

TRANSLATORS

A rather specialized area of use to some publishers is that of who can translate your books for you. Sometimes it's better to engage a native writer to do this, but in any instance, translating demands a high level of skill in understanding the meaning back of the words.

INDEXERS

Authors of non-fiction books are well-advised to have their books indexed, particularly if there is hope or expectation of their succeeding in the library market. Arguments rage over whether the index should be created by hand by the author of the book (primary point: the author knows the material better than anyone else), or whether the job should be done by a professional indexer (primary point: the indexer brings the outside view -- how a reader might go about finding the desired information).

Another aspect of the argument is whether to use a computer program. A professional indexer, Dan Connolly, brought to my attention that computer programs generate concondances, not indexes. He clarifies the area in his discussion of concordance or index, An Index or a Concordance for Your Book?, an article well-worth bookmarking. His site also has articles on working with indexers. (The Cat has long come down on the side of having this important task done by a trained professional.) An indexer brings two assets to the project: (1) the indexer brings the outside view, essentially eyes that represent the reader who will be using the index and a point of view different from the author; and (2) the indexer brings experience and training in index writing, an actual skill, not just noting words and subjects. (It would be of course perfectly fair game for the author to identify points of particular concern to the professional to insure that it is properly covered).

Finding an indexer is one of the easiest thing in the world to do. However, indexers, like many other professionals, have organized. The national organization is the American Society of Indexers. This site provides info about the organization, how to reach its members, and links to all sorts of other sites that may be reference works or other related organizations.

It should be noted that many of the editors listed earlier in this site also do indexing, so you might want to check them out as well.

Dan indexes trade, reference and textbooks of all types. He has extensive experience in education/psychology, sports/recreation, history, and environmental issues. He also maintains information on his website about learning to index, and is available to consult on indexing projects in progress. Don't forget to check out the articles on various aspects of indexing. Just go to the main page and click on "Articles."
He has a monograph on the subject of indexing at http://www.wfwbooks.com/howto.htm that is well worth reading and studying. Dan also tipped the Cat off to the American Society of Indexer's Indexer Locator and Indexers Unlimited.

Indexing requires knowledge. Most professional indexers are specialists in particular subject matter areas. Able Indexers will evaluate your book honestly, and if we think another specialist can do the job better we will refer you. Our specialties include computer books, radio and electronic books, the history of Ireland, the Irish (Gaelic) language, operations research, management science, production control and military histories.

An indexer tells the Cat "They [the American Society] have available (free, to publishers) a listing of Indexers Available. This is a book that contains indexers grouped by subject matter, material (type of book/matter), geography, and of course, alphabetically. It's the best way I know of to find a good indexer, if you don't already know one."

Better still (and faster), check out their Indexer Locator which points to other publisher groups, media finders and numerous other sites.

Again, this is a professional group's site that is replete with much more than mere listings of where their chapters are. Well worth marking.

A very good reference on creating indexes is The Art of Indexing, by Larry S. Bonura. The Chicago Manual of Style has a section on how to go about indexing. The best book about indexing is called Indexing Books, by Nancy C. Mulvany (University of Chicago Press).
