THE SPECIALISTS AND EXPERTSAs touched on in THE Prepublishing Handbook--What you should know BEFORE you publish your first book, a new publisher can, with study and good models, perform some of the necessary tasks personally. For this reason, the Tool Shed also includes articles by experts on how to do; how to create a business plan, how to develop a promotional campaign, etc. But sometimes these tasks are beyond a person's current level, or perhaps the time constraints call for outside help. A big problem for neophyte publishers is finding who can provide the services needed in producing a good product. The specialists listed below have been identified by other publishers as worth noting. Disclaimer: Cat's-paw Press cannot vouch for the reliability or price of the services; the Tool Shed itself is a service from Cat's-paw Press where we firmly believe in assisting neophyte publishers compete as strongly as possible in a sometimes daunting environment. This section of the Tool Shed is devoted to the experts who deal with the life of a book's manuscript, most specifically editors, indexers and translators; for publicists and promotional information, go to the Promotion and Publicity room; to find designers of various sorts, go to the Designers section. Likewise, for experts in the production arena -- printing, prepress and the like, go to Production Issues room. For copyright and other legal questions, visit Copyright Information
Freelance Help is another great site for additional sources of experts; not only does it link to this site but also to others of interest to publishers. Table of ContentsEDITORS and TEXT EXPERTSOne of the greatest benefit an author can give to a book is to have it properly, professionally, thoroughly edited. In her newsletter early in 2001, Chris Roerden had these words of advice. She has kindly given permission for them to be posted here. Read, enjoy, heed.
How to spend more on editing and make it take longer
Thanks, Chris! *********************************
A basic question that neophytes raise has to do with terminology. You'll hear "substantive editing" and "copy editing"; you'll hear "line editing" and "production editing." The Editors' Association of Canada gives a detailed description of the various tasks. The following list was developed from references by members of the now-defunct PMA-Listserv and the Bookmarket list, as well as from personal acquaintance. __________________

Named 1993 Fellow in Nonfiction Literature by New York Foundation for the Arts. _________________ One of Minnesota's major industries is publishing; the large number of small to mid-sized presses has made it an attractive place for free-lance editors. PEN is an association of free-lance editors, with some indexers and proofreaders a part of the group. The Cat has often used their print directory to point interested people to the "right" editor, and happily that directory is now on-line at their web site. You can find other goodies there, too. _________________ Having a degree in English is mostly good for teaching how to write English papers. It doesn't necessarily make a good editor. The best editor for you is one who has been trained to edit the type of material you are publishing. In most cases, this means the editor will have worked full-time at some point in his or her career in a position where their work was supervised and guided. At the very least, it should mean that they have done a great deal of free-lance editing involving your same type of material. Fiction editors aren't necessarily the best choice to edit science texts, etc. Earlier, this item noted the Freelancers Editorial Association;please note that it has merged and is now a part of the Editorial Freelancers Association. The Editorial Freelancers Association is a good place to look for an editor, but you have to remember you will probably get a list of people who cared enough about editing to pay their dues. It's still up to you to check them out. _________________ ESTABLISHED IN 1979, the Editors' Association of Canada is a national, nonprofit organization of both English- and French-language editors, with more than 950 members from coast to coast. _________________ Finally, one last place: the Copyeditors' page. They have a link to the very helpful Copyediting-l Style FAQ for help in keeping your work consistent. You can also find freelance editors listed in Literary Market Place What Will It Cost?To get an idea of what it will cost to have your work edited, the Editorial Freelancers Association posted a Fee and Scheduling Guidelines on their web site that will be helpful in forecasting costs of getting a manuscript ready to go into production. This is not the rates survey of EFA members; it is the EFA's suggested rate standards. These rates are only suggested standards, and in practice will vary widely. Most trade publishers, for example, are not willing to pay the higher rates that corporate clients might. The Cat was also apprised of the actual survey results of writing and editing rates, as reported by National Writers Union members. This survey is much more detailed than EFA's suggested rates and is categorized by field of work (business/technical/electronic, books, magazines, etc.) and type of work done (various kinds of writing, editing, proofreading, design, etc.). It should be remembered that freelancers often are willing to negotiate and that small publishers shouldn't be afraid to be upfront about their needs and means.

TRANSLATORSA rather specialized area of use to some publishers is that of who can translate your books for you. Sometimes it's better to engage a native writer to do this, but in any instance, translating demands a high level of skill in understanding the meaning back of the words. _________________ Chinese Translation from Chinese to English and English to Chinese ______________ Eduardo Teixeira Nunes is a leading-edge consultant, author, writer, translator and entrepreneur. INDEXERSAuthors of non-fiction books are well-advised to have their books indexed, particularly if there is hope or expectation of their succeeding in the library market. Arguments rage over whether the index should be created by hand by the author of the book (primary point: the author knows the material better than anyone else), or whether the job should be done by a professional indexer (primary point: the indexer brings the outside view -- how a reader might go about finding the desired information). Another aspect of the argument is whether to use a computer program. A professional indexer, Dan Connolly, brought to my attention that computer programs generate concondances, not indexes.
