Robotech

When it comes to mecha, Robotech is king. Fighter planes transform into battle suits. A kilometer-plus long space fortress transforms into a gigantic robot. They are only a couple of the many types of mechanized armor in the Robotech universe. This mid 80's anime is the U.S. adaptation of SDF Macross combined with the footage and storylines of two other completely unrelated anime series, and is often credited with getting Americans hooked on anime. I never got to watch all of Robotech before on TV. Now ADV Films has released the Robotech saga on DVD and AnimEigo put out a DVD box set of SDF Macross--uncut, restored video and original Japanese language track. I opted for the AnimEigo box set :)

Rick Hunter's VF-1J Valkyrie in various modes of transformation. Top to bottom: fighter, something I can't remember, gerwalk, and battroid. Whoever comes up with these transforming mecha designs is a genious. The VF-1J is assigned to team leaders.
Roy Focker's VF-1S Valkyrie in various modes of transformation. The VF-1S is assigned to squadron leaders.
