Starblazers (Uchuu Senkan Yamato)

Starblazers is one of the greatest anime of all time to me. Although it is old school and the animation is dated by today's standards, the drama of this space adventure is unmatched by even some of the more recent anime. The sunken Japanese World War II battleship Yamato is rebuilt centuries later for space travel to save the Earth from annihilation by hostile aliens. The Earth is poisoned by radiation from planet bombs launched by the aliens. The queen of a distant planet called Iscandar offered a device to the people of Earth that could remove the radiation. However Iscandar is 148,000 light years away from Earth. The Yamato needed to travel to Iscandar and back within one year before all life on Earth would perish. Thus began the quest to Iscandar. I remember as a kid going wild seeing Yamato movie posters, model kits, and toys all over the place during a trip to Japan.
