MATERIALS: For best results use- CLARK'S O.N.T. OR J. & P. COATS BEST Six CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Size 50:

SMALL BALL:

CLARK'S O.N.T. 14 balls of White or Ecru. Or 19 balls of any color.

J. & P. COATS 10 balls of White or Ecru, Or 14 balls of any color.

BIG BALL:

CLARK'S O.N.T. OR J. & P. COATS 6 balls of White or Ecru

.MILWARD'S steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13.

Completed runner measures about 13 1/2 x 31 1/ 2 inches;

Each place mat measures about 12 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches across center.

GAUGE: Each motif measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter.

PLACE MATS (Make 61 motifs)

First Motif... Ch 10, join with sl st.

1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 d c in ring. Join to 3rd st of ch-3.

2nd rnd: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 to 1st sp.

3rd rnd: Ch 10, * skip 1 sp, tr in next sp, ch 6. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-6 to 4th st of ch-10.

4th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 2 ch. dc in next ch, ch 2, dc in next ch, ch 2, sc in next tr. Repeat from * around; join.

5th rnd: * Ch 2, dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, d c in next d c, ch 2, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Fasten off.

Second Motif... Work 4 rnds as for 1st motif.

5th rnd: Ch 2, dc in next dc, * ch 1, sl st in corresponding sp on 1st motif, ch 1, dc in next sp on second motif, ch 1, sl st in next sp on first motif, ch 1, dc in next d c on second motif, ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * once more; complete rnd as for 1st motif.

Make 2 more motifs, joining as 2nd was joined to 1st. This completes one strip. Make another strip of 5 motifs, joining 2 points of each motif to 2 points of adjacent motifs as before (motifs fall between those of previous strip). Continue thus, making 1 strip of 6 motifs, 1 strip of 7 motifs, then 1 strip of 6 motifs, 1 strip of 5 motifs, and 1 strip of 4 motifs. This completes 1 place mat.

RUNNER... Make 1st strip of 14 motifs, then 1 strip of 15 motifs, 1 strip of 16 motifs, 1 strip of 17 motifs, 1 strip of 18 motifs, 1 strip of 17 motifs, 1 strip of 16 motifs, 1 strip of 15 motifs, and last strip of 14 motifs.
