Hi, I am Webi, The Pretty Web Girl. I am the host of this web page. This is the third page of the serialized internet novel, The Ultimate Quest, by Flor Dery.    Now, let's web with Kuest in Chapter 1 as he starts his adventure in search of the vortex of Umbra Omega.
Chapter 1- The Quest Begins (part 1)
After several moon dreams passed after the death of his father, Kuest was building a glider on top of a towering cliff overlooking a great valley. In the distance were the mist and cloud covered mountains. Beyond were the faint outlines of many worlds. Intermittent and strong winds broke the thick clouds, but it barely let in the yellow and red lights from the binary stars of Mundo. The signs of a gloomy springtime were evident everywhere. The grasses were not so green, but a flower or two could be seen here and there. The trees were mostly bare and not a single sound of a chirping bird could be heard, except for the concerned twittering of Goliath who was perched on a branch of a tree. Nearby, Kuest ignored him and continued to put the finishing touches on the glider.
Goliath was animated, and he tried to discourage Kuest. "I hate this quest! We don't know where we are going. And little me and you...are going to destroy the shadows!? he said. Then he made a fake choking sound, "Argh!" Goliath deliberately and comically fell down and hit the ground flat on his back.
Kuest turned and saw the comical position of Goliath on the ground with his wings spread out and his feet up. He shook his head, stopped his work, and picked up Goliath. He tapped his head gently to assure him. "We'll ask the visionary and dream seer, Aisling, The Princess of the Great Forest. She will show us the way. Besides, we also have the two silver rocks. Probably it will help us destroy the shadows."
"Probably!? Destroy the shadows with those two eggs!?" Goliath incredelously asked. Then he made a dismayed sigh. "No wonder, you will be a loser like your father and grandfather!"
"These are not eggs," Kuest countered with a bit of annoyance. Then he showed the silver rocks. "See! Besides, my father and grandfather are not losers! They just didn't find the vortex."
"That's the point!" Goliath emphatically answered back. "They were lost! They were L-O-S-E-R-S, losers!"
Kuest nonchalantly ignored Goliath and said, "Yeah...sure...uh-huh." Then he moved the glider to the edge of the cliff. He looked back at Goliath. "If we don't do something, we'll also become losers!" Kuest jumped off the cliff with the glider. "Let's go and find Aisling!"
Goliath was shocked. He couldn't believe what he heard. "You don't know where Aisling is?" he asked.
"No! But she's somewhere beyond the Dancing Aurora," Kuest answered. "That's where we are going!"
Goliath flew after Kuest as he shouted, "We're looost!!!"
Kuest's glider gently glided down the cliff. Then it arched and followed a rushing river snaking along the valley floor. A powerful wind propelled the glider upward, breaking through the thick clouds covering the mountain peaks. The winds of gravity shot it into the dream space of Andromeda. Goliath followed closely behind. They soared and navigated through the worlds of every size and shape. Some were odd looking and many were grotesque in form. Then they winged through and beyond the colorful dancing lights of Aurora. The view was so breath-taking that even Goliath was amazed and he forgot all his worries.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, an object whooshed by as it streaked past between Kuest and Goliath.
"Huh!? What the...!?" Kuest reacted with a startled look on his face. His glider tumbled with part of the wing torn caused by the passing object.
    Goliath spun, twittering, "WAAAAAAAH!!!"
Deeply concerned Kuest swung his glider after Goliath. "Goliath are you alright?"
Goliath regained his bearing, though ruffled and shaken. "I'm ok! What is that thing?"
Turning and looking at the object receding fast away from them, "That's some kind of traveling machine from the primitive world called Earth," Kuest explained. "They call it Voyager. A deep space probe. But they'll never find what they are looking for, until they learn to live in their dreams."
"Another race of losers, like us!" retorted Goliath.
"We have to make an emergency landing," Kuest said. He pointed to a nearby world, "There! That's a good place to fix this thing."
Kuest banked the glider and flew toward it. Goliath followed. They dove through the thick clouds and emerged above a rugged primeval forest with stratospheric trees. As they glided above the tree tops, they noticed the serenity of the place. But then the silence was broken by the sound of the thundering herd of animals rampaging beneath the forest floor. Kuest and Goliath curiously reacted. They looked at each other, then they looked down toward the direction of the sound of the commotion. From out of the forest emerged a girl running toward a nearby river. Chasing after her was a herd of vicious and mean looking dinosaurs. They were aghast at what they saw.
"We have to help her!" Kuest exclaimed.
"What!? From those dinosaurs!? Y-you can't be s-serious!?" astonished Goliath asked.
But Kuest dove the glider toward the girl while Goliath froze in fear at the thought of fighting those dinosaurs. Eventually, he gathered his strength and reluctantly dove after Kuest.
"Geronimoo!" Goliath shouted as he dove and pointed his sharp beak down toward the charging lead dinosaur.
As the dinosaur opened its big mouth to grab the girl with its fearsome teeth, Kuest swung by just in time and snatched her by the belt, and then winged the glider upward. At the same time Goliath aimed for the butt, but missed and instead he hit the butt crack and into the...you know what of the dinosaur, bull's-eye. It gave out a painful loud roar, then stampeded erratically, jumping and crawling here and there. It distracted all the dinosaurs and stopped there pursuit of the girl.
After a while, Goliath was farted out onto the ground and the dinosaur gave a sigh of relief. In the meantime, Goliath gasped, sputtered and spat, "Gasp! Yuck! Spit! Yak! Ick! Blech! Phooey! Ptui!" The unbearable smell made him very angry. "I hate shiiiit!!!" He tried to clean himself as he flew after Kuest.
The girl struggled to free herself from Kuest. "How dare you interfere with my dinosaur hunting!" she said with displeasure.
"Hunting dinosaurs!?" Kuest asked with disbelief. "Or are the dinosaurs hunting you?"
Instead of answering Kuest she snapped back,"Drop me this instant!"
    "Drop you?"
"I said drop me, you moron!"
"Okay!" said Kuest, feeling insulted. Then he glided close to the river surface and dropped her down. "What an ungrateful feisty girl!"
The girl splashed as she dropped into the waist high water. Mad as a dinosaur and cursing, she waded to the shore, and then picked up a smooth stone. She took her sling shot from her belt, swung it around with the stone and released it. It arched upward and hit the supporting wood frame of Kuest's glider. Crack!
"What the...!?" Kuest uttered in surprise as he saw the wood frame of his glider break. It dove downward and hit Goliath, who was flying below, and then smacked him to the ground. He twittered in pain.
Kuest emerged from the wreckage, and then looked around for Goliath. He found him and gently put him on the palm of his hand. "Are you ok?" he asked.
"Nooo!" Goliath angrily answered back. "I hate this glider."
"Ugh," Kuest grimaced and covered his nose, "you're like shit!"
"I am not shit!" Goliath vehemently protested. "I smell like shit!"
Suddenly, the girl appeared and threatened them with her sling shot as she forcefully pointed at Kuest, "Don't you ever drop me again into the water."
Kuest scratched his head in disbelief, "I thought you wanted me to drop you."
"I don't know how to swim!" she retorted.
As she turned to leave, he asked, "I am Kuest. What's your name?"
"Aithne, The Little Fire Warrior of the Amazon," she replied as she looked back at Kuest, "I am a dinosaur hunter." She winked at him, then scampered off and vanished among the woods criss-crossed by vines.
