Phantom Flames
PHANTOM FLAMES
HOW-TO
These are the items you will need to complete your Phantoms Flames:

Flower pot/urn or container of your choice
1 muffin fan-must be 110-115 volt 14 watt
1 connector wire for the fan
3 light string with in-line switch
Glass paint  blue and orange
39 inches of L bracket (the type used along the wall in dropped ceilings)
2 yellow wire nuts
4  6 -32x2in nuts and bolts
Aluminum foil
Silk essence fabric (can be found at Jo-Ann fabric shops)
Spray adhesive
Duct tape

Tools list:
Hammer
Screwdriver
Tin snips
Drill and bit set
Wooden form for bencind brackets (cut from a 2x4)
Utility knife

STEPS

1.  Spray inside of urn with adhesive.
2.  Line inside of urn with aluminum foil, shinny side out (This elimates any light leaking through the urn and acts as a reflector for the lights)
3.  Cut the L bracket into 3 pieces.  2- 9 in,  and 1-18 in.
4.  Take the 18 inch piece and pound it flat.
5.  Cut the 18 in piece lengthwise down the center.
6.  Drill 2 holes in both of the 9 in. pieces centered on the bracket and far enough apart to line up wtih one pair of th fan holes.
7.  Mount the brackets on the fan.  They will be too long for the urn, but don't worry about that.
8,  Trim the brackets until they allow the fan to sit in the pot about 1 in. below the surface.  The brackets should be cut at an angle to better match the shape of the urn.
9.  Once the brackets are properly trimmed, cover the ends with duct tape.  This will prevent them from shredding the foil liner.
10. Cut the light string half  way between the switch and the first light bulb.
11. Seperate the wires on the two pieces you just cut and the fan connector wire (if it's not built into the fan).
12. Drill a hole in the bottom of the urn large enough to pass the light cord through.
13. Pass the wire with the switch through the bottom of the pot and connect one wire from each set using the wire nuts. 2 sets (one switch wire, one fan wired, one light wire nutter together)  The connections should be at the bottom of the urn.
14. Using the wooden form, bend one piece of the cut L bracket around the wooden form to make a triangle.  Start on the longest side of the triangle and use a hammer to make the corners tight.  Cut the L bracket allowing about 2 inches overlap.
15. Use duct tape to connect the two ends together and form a smooth triangle.
16. Repeat steps 14-15
17. Place the two triangles between the brackets attached to the fan.  These are essential to insure the proper air flow.
19. Attach the triangles together at the center using duct tape.
20. Cut the silk essence in approx the shape shown on the picture.
21. Attach the fabric to opposite corners of the fan.
22. Using the glass paint. paint 2 orange bulbs and one blue.  When dry attach to the light cord.
23. Posititon the lights in the pot below the top.  The lights have a little wing like piece on them, this will sit nicely on the edge of the fan assembly.  The light should be placed with the blue in the middle and the orange on either side.
24.  Plug in and wait for the compliments.
NOTE:
Please remember that this unit is best when it is place above eye level.

FAQ
Q.  Why don't you paint the inside instead using foil?
A.  I do it this way for a couple of reasons.  If you paint the inside silver it will take 3 or more coats and you may still get some light leakage.  Becuase I use plastic urns, I've found that the paint doesn't adhere well.  After using one for a couple of weeks the paint pealed off.  The foil gives an irregular surface that reflects the light in a random fashion.  After several tries, this was the method which seems to work best.
