CATS, CATS, EVERYWHERE!

CATS, CATS, EVERYWHERE!

Stray or Feral?

What is the difference between a stray cat and a feral cat? A stray cat is one that is accustomed to humans, although may still be somewhat timid. Often it at one time had an owner and has either become lost or abandoned.

A feral cat is one that has no experience with humans or only bad experiences.

The problem...

Both stray and feral cats that have not been altered (spayed or neutered) WILL produce more cats. An overabundance of cats and kittens in any area is usually handled by trapping the animals and euthenizing (killing) them. Not only is this a sad thing, but studies have shown that the population continues to increase.

What else can be done?

There have been some studies done (I plan to add links to them soon) that have shown that there is another more humane method that keeps the cat population down. By trapping the cats, altering them and then releasing them back into the area from where they were trapped, this keeps the population down. It sounds crazy but it has to do with the territory that the cats have already staked out.

I have had the pleasure of recently beginning to work with an organization called Friends For Life in the Elk Grove-Laguna area on just such a project. We hope to continue trapping on a regular basis in order to keep the cat population down in our area. In the future I hope to begin listing trapping dates on this site.

Thanks for viewing my site and please email me if you would like information on how you might help.
