In the 1880's, there was a brief crime wave, including murders and other acts of violence and the robbing of graves for cadavers for medicinal schools. The owner and editor of the weekly Iron Valley Reporter, W. W. Scott, printed vivid accounts of these crimes and the trials. This procedure had not been followed by other newspapers in the county before his time. As a result murder trial lawyers sought to bar from the jury anyone who had read Scott's articles. The objections became so routine in Common Pleas Court that Editor Scott prefaced his murder stories with this notation: "If you want to serve on the jury in this case don't read this article."

1900-Two women doctors, Dr. Martha Shatler of Dover and Dr. Nancy Richards of New Philadelphia, began plans for establishing a hospital in a former private residence on W. 4th St., Dover. This later became Union Hospital. In 1904, J. E. Reeves donated a 1 1/2 acre site on E. Iron Ave. to replace this hospital. Construction was started in 1908. [my great Aunt Ida Funk was head cook and general caretaker there when it was still on W. 4th.K]
