Why the Rich and Famous Cheat

The break-up between Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook over his extramarital affair with Diana Bianchi is proof that the rich and famous aren’t immune to extramarital affairs.
Surprisingly, though their lifestyle may differ, the rich and famous cheat for many of the same reasons ordinary people do. Let's take a closer look at some of the reasons for celebrity infidelity.
Reasons the Rich and Famous Cheat
A Sense Of Entitlement
Many celebrities, politicians, corporate executives and other public figures feel that because of who they are, they can cheat on their mates with impunity.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #1 - Bill Clinton who told Dan Rather he cheated with Monica Lewinsky “just because he could.”
Celebrity Infidelity Example #2 - Former Boeing CEO Harry Stonecipher who was forced to resign because of his affair with Boeing executive Debra Peabody.

Peer Pressure
With celebrity infidelity constantly in the news, many rock stars, sports figures, actors and other famous people feel that infidelity is the norm. In the sports world, players may even encourage fellow players to cheat on their mates. Many celebrities feel that infidelity “goes with the territory” -- that the public expects them to be unfaithful.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #3 In an interview earlier this year, rock legend, Jon Bon Jovi commented that in the music industry, cheating was essentially part of the job.
Opportunistic Sex
Celebrities are often presented with opportunities to cheat on their mates without the fear of getting caught. They frequently take advantage of these situations.

Celebrity Infidelity Example #5 - Jude Law, who cheated on Sienna Miller with his children’s nanny.
Something Lacking
On rare occasions, there may be something lacking in the marriage or relationship. Celebrity Infidelity Example #6 - For Brad Pitt, children seemed to be the missing ingredient. It caused him to form strong emotional bonds with Angelina Jolie ( and her son) which undermined Brad’s marriage to Jennifer Aniston, and led to their divorce.
Sex Addiction
Serial cheaters may actually be sex addicts. This was rumored to be the cause of the divorce of Halle Berry from Eric Benet. Halle told Oprah he repeatedly cheated on her with other women.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #7 - Eric Benet, who supposedly had as many as 10 affairs while married to Halle, went into rehabilitation for sex addiction; but apparently to no avail.
Sexual Curiosity or the Desire for a Different Type of Sex
Sometimes the rich and famous use their celebrity status as an avenue to fulfill their sexual fantasies, satisfy hidden sexual desires, or give in to their true sexual orientation
Celebrity Infidelity Example #8 - Jonathan Plummer, whom author Terry McMillan divorced because his curiosity about sex with men led to same sex infidelity.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #9 - Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey who resigned because he cheated on his wife with a male employee who threatened to expose their same-sex affair.
The Knowledge That They Can Get Away With It
Many celebrity cheaters know their partner won’t make waves - as long as they’re discreet with their infidelity, keep things low key, and avoid publicly embarrassing their mate.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #10 - Mick Jagger whose infidelities Jerry Hall tolerated for years until it became known that he’d fathered a secret love-child with Brazilian model Luciana Morad.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #11 Jack Nicholson whose infidelity actress Anjelica Huston says she tolerated during their 17-year relationship, because “he was 'the world's sexiest, most gorgeous man.”
Love
Sometime they actually do it for love.
Celebrity Infidelity Example #12 - Prince Charles cheated on the late Princess Diana in an ongoing affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, whome he finally married last year.
Other Reasons for Celebrity Infidelity
As you can see, the reasons the rich and famous cheat are as varied as the cheaters themselves. Other reasons for celebrity infidelity include:
Inability or Unwillingness to Resist Temptation Or To Say No
The lifestyles the rich and famous lead can often expose them to greater temptation than the average Joe. Remaining faithful can present quite a challenge. Rock stars, sports figures, and actors are surrounded by groupies, adoring fans, and other females willing to perform any kind of sex act on request. Many celebrities find it impossible to resist such temptation. Others may be unwilling, or simply don’t know how to say “No”.

Low Self Esteem
Non-celebrity spouses married to famous husband or wives will sometimes cheat for what I call “ego-embellishment” reasons – the desire to feel special, important, sought after. This may be especially true if the non-celebrity mate suffers from low self esteem, and finds himself struggling to live in the shadow of a famous spouse. Aware of the media’s fascination with celebrity infidelity, he may actually cheat (consciously or subconsciously) with that in mind.
The Thrill of the Chase
Many cheaters actually thrive on the excitement generated by all the subterfuge required to conduct a secret affair. They view infidelity as a form of recreation, or a high-risk sport.
The Influence of Drugs or Alcohol
A great deal of infidelity can be attributed to the influence drugs or alcohol, which can lower inhibitions, and impair good judgment, resulting in behavior one may later regret.
Viewing Infidelity as a Status Symbol
For many rich and/or famous men, it’s actually considered a status symbol to have a mistress on the side.
Poor Role Models
If his father, uncles, or other male role models cheated, he may be subconsciously programmed to follow their example, considering infidelity to be the norm.
Reasons We May Never Know
We can only speculate why during his relationship with Elizabeth Hurley, Hugh Grant propositioned prostitute Divine Brown.
Precautions to take
Since fame, fortune, good looks and a happy marriage are no protection against infidelity, was there anything Christie Brinkley could have done to prevent Peter Cook from having an affair? Not much, since Peter Cook’s cheating was unrelated to anything Christie did or didn’t do. He even admitted as much when he made his public apology, saying he had no real excuse for what he did.
Like most wives whose husbands are having affairs, Christie was the last to know. So what can a woman do? The best offense is a good defense. Learn to recognize the early warning signs. The many subtle signs of infidelity that appear before infidelity actually takes place can alert you that he’s on the verge of having an affair. Spot the signs early enough and you may be able to take positive action and nip things in the bud before they blossom into a full blown affair. At the very least, you have some kind of warning of what’s about to take place.
