Editing and Proofreading

Background, clients, and services

Background and affiliations

I have over 20 years experience as an editor and proofreader, with a focus on business (including the business aspects of health care), education, social sciences, women's studies, and technical topics. I started out in the Manuscript Editing Department of the University of Chicago Press, and have freelanced for many publishers, associations, and other businesses. I also have printing production experience.

My education (ever continuing) includes a BA and MA in English from Northwestern University; business, desktop publishing, computer courses, and a Web site management certificate from Oakton Community College (Des Plaines, Illinois); and printing courses at the Printing Institute of Illinois.

I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and the Communications Resource Network, a group of graphic-arts related professionals in the Chicago area, and am active with the Northwestern U. alumni.

Sample clients and publications

Azrael is a collection of religious poetry by T.A. Gibson. Azrael, the angel whose name literally means "help of God," symbolizes the agent of change in the stages of a person's life and experiences. Gibson builds on a long tradition of poets who have explored spiritual themes, including the metaphysical poets and Emily Dickinson. The beautiful cover art by Lynn Jensen Steffey, reminiscent of William Blake, complements this thoughtful book.
Remarkable Woman magazine is a Chicago-area publication for business and professional women (now available online only). Features include career and financial advice, health and lifestyle issues, fashion trends, profiles of prominent women, and much more.
BCA: Business Case Analysis by James W. Brannock, STS Publications, 2004. Based on 30 years' experience as a management consultant, Dr. Brannock guides the reader step by step in performing a business case analysis in order to evaluate the opportunities and risks of business decisions. He writes, "I am most indebted for the thorough, professional editing services you provided in helping 'debug' the book and making it more readable."
Proven Home-Based Business Ideas compiled by Susan Kent, Full Circle Publications, 2002. Have you ever wanted to go into business for yourself? This book is a good starting point.
The Chicago CAREgiver is a publication devoted to the concerns of family and professional caregivers in the Chicagoland area.
The National Wetlands Newsletter is published bimonthly by the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, D.C.
International M&A, Joint Ventures, and Beyond: Doing the Deal (Wiley Frontiers in Finance) by David J. BenDaniel and Arthur H. Rosenbloom, John Wiley & Sons, 1997. These nice folks are a freelance editor's dream: they gave me credit in the Acknowledgments page!
Contemporary Feminist Theory: A Text/Reader by Mary F. Rogers (Editor), McGraw-Hill College Div., 1997. This provocative collection features essays by women of many races and cultural backgrounds.
The June 1998 issue of the Spokesman of the City of Park Ridge, Illinois, celebrating the city's 125-year anniversary, was nominated for the Best Newsletter award in the annual Chicago Women in Publishing contest.
Financial Analysis and Decision Making for Healthcare Organizations: A Guide for the Healthcare Professional by Louis C. Gapenski, Irwin Professional Publishing, 1997. This book comes with a disk of sample spreadsheets that illlustrate concepts in the book.
The 60611 Report, one of a series of marketing publications produced by Avant Guard Associates, was circulated to marketing executives in Chicago's North Michigan Avenue area.

My recent projects include a book of religious poetry, a trade show directory, a textbook on business case analysis, academic papers, children's online lessons at e-Tutor, software training materials for the American Dietetic Association and Rotary International, math textbooks for Everyday Learning Corporation, and newsletters for local elected officials.
