All about my SCOLI
To make a really really really long story kinda short I was diagnosed with scoliosis in August of 1998 (almost four years ago wow!). That fall I was put into a back brace that I wore (kinda)until march of 2000 when they told me I needed surgery. My curves had reached 48 and 54 degrees. I went for a second opinion and a third opinion and ended up at the Hershey Medical Center w/ the best doc ever! www.pennstateorthopaedics.com Before surgery I did all the usual stuff...had an MRI, gave 3 units of blood, and did pre-op. I had my surgery on Nov 3, 2000. Basically what they do during surgery is they attach two metal rods to your spine with hooks and screws and straighten out the spine as much as possible. Then they lay bone graft over top of it so that it will fuse (harden)into solid bone. This takes 6-12 months and that's why recovery is sooo long. So anyway I was in the hospital for 5 days and out of school for about a month. I can't bend very well except for at the hips. If you knew about scoli you would be able to tell I had it because of my rib hump, but otherwise you wouldn't know. I couldn't swim for a long time after surgery and when I went back that summer I got tendinitis in my shoulders :(
I wasn't having any pain in my back or anything and everything was going really well until I started swimming for the winter season. I was getting pain inbetween my shoulder blades and it made it really hard to practice and swim. So on April 26 2002 I had another surgery to remove a small peice of the rod on the right side. Now my pain is gone and I'm pretty happy! Oh yeah my curves are about 24 and 26 now!:) There's a whole lot more to my story so IM me and I'll tell you all about it!

All about my SCOLISCOLI GIRLS!
Scoliosis can be as positive or as negative as you make it. When I was in my brace I thought I was the only one with scoli and I was totally alone. It was the worst feeling ever and if I would've known there were so many other people out there I might have been more inclined to wear my brace. It wasn't until right before my surgery that I realized I wasn't alone. During my recovery I started talking to a lot of girls who really helped me to get better and it wasn't long before I found myself telling others about my experience and helping them. It's an awesome feeling to help other people like that! Now there are soooo many girls out there who I keep in contact with and there are more and more every day. You girls are soooooo important to me and I don't know what I'd ever do without you. My school friends are awesome and everything and I love em to death, but it's hard to understand what it's like to have scoli if you don't have scoli! You girls have helped me through some really hard times and I thank you soo much :)
It's so awesome to take a potentially negative thing and turning into something so incredibly positive!
