SPRINGFIELD TRANSIT HISTORYIn 1866, the Springfield City Railway Co. introduced horse car service in Springfield. Later on, the Springfield Consolidated Railway Co. and the Illinois Power Co. were the streetcar companies, until the Springfield Transportation Co. took over, and operated the buses until the public takeover.

SPRINGFIELD TRANSIT FACILITIESThe carhouse for horsecars was located in downtown Springfield, at the southeast corner of 4th St. and Monroe St. And the electric streetcars were then based at the carhouse at 610 E. Ash St., on Springfield's south side. The carhouse eventually evolved into the bus garage used in later years.
