And in 2003, the Bi-State Development Agency was renamed Metro. The last streetcars ran in 1966, although a new light rail line opened in 1993.

ST. LOUIS TRANSIT HISTORY/MAPSSeveral street railway companies operated in St. Louis from 1859 until 1898, when the United Railways Co. of St. Louis assumed operation of all electric railways in St. Louis. From 1927 to 1963, the St. Louis Public Service Co. was the main transit provider. The People's Motorbus Co. operated the first buses beginning in 1923, in competition with the streetcars. But those buses were taken over by the St. Louis Public Service Co. in 1934.
