"Crossley, you should have handled this yourself.  A prisoner of this magnitude and you put two of your students on this!!!  You are going to fucking hang, I'll personally see to it"!  I looked at General Cleveland and said, "I can assure you, sir, that these two men had been trained by me properly in all aspects of these job functions".  General Cleveland just turned his head away from me.  I knew I made a major mistake in saying that I would kill Kim Dun Lee when he came into my custody.  I could tell the General was very disappointed in me.  He knew as well as I did if I would have been escorting Lee he would not have escaped.
The following day the news of Lance Corporal Kim Dun Lee's escape from custody hit the local media on the island of Oahu.  They were having a field day with us.  With the amount of dangerous weapons that were unaccounted for, the locals were now going to hold us accountable for putting basically everyone on the island in harm's way.  I knew the most important thing was to get those weapons back in our possession.  That was pretty much an impossible task without having Lee in custody.  It was not known at this point whether or not Lee was being harbored by someone on the island or whether he had escaped completely from Oahu.  I now well realized that I had given the Corps a black-eye and that I too would pay dearly for this.
In mid-afternoon the Chief of Staff again confronts me angrily, "Sgt. Crossley, I interviewed the two chasers that Lee escaped from.  They said that you never had trained them properly"!  I told the Colonel, "Sir, respectfully, that is a fucking lie".  He replied, "Really, Sgt. Crossley, I have their record books right here in front of me.  Show me in the training section where you documented what you taught them"!  I just froze.  I knew full well I hadn't done any documentation in their Service Record Books.  It was apparent now I was in real deep trouble.  It is a golden rule that whenever training of any kind is afforded it must be documented as such in the Marines record book.  I said, "Colonel, I've been doing two full-time jobs, I just didn't have the time to do this".  The Colonel replied, "That's bullshit Crossley, you apparently have time to get married and run all over the island with your woman".  I wanted to rip this Colonel's head off.  But, in essence, I knew he was right.  The Supreme Court says, "If it's not documented, it never happened".
Later on in the week my worse fears came true.  It was confirmed, Lance Corporal Kim Dun Lee had escaped and made it off to the island and was somewhere back on the continental United States.  I was relieved of duty as the Commanding General's Secretary.  This was being kept as quiet as possible.  It was portrayed that I was only reassigned due to an oversight on a reenlistment bonus that prohibited me from working outside my Military Occupational Specialty.  I was confused as to why the real reason for me being relieved was kept so quiet.  Usually when the Marine Corps gets a "black-eye" the person they hang are made a public spectacle of.
It was approximately four months until Kim Dun Lee was apprehended in California by the FBI.  He was then delivered back to Hawaii.  During these four months I agonized over the events that had taken place and the awful mistakes that I had made.  I knew General Cleveland had greatly believed in me.  Now, I had let him down terribly.  I began to recall the wonderful memories my wife and I had with the General and his family.  When I first went to work at the General's office my wife knew absolutely nothing of the military and its structure.  She walked into the Headquarters building one day and was strolling around the corridors in a pair of old jeans and a baggy tee- shirt.  Unknowingly to my wife, she walked into the Commanding General's office this day and just started holding a casual conversation with General Cleveland.  She also got the General to escort her around the building looking for me!!!  A Commanding General looking for a Sergeant!!!  I guess General Cleveland loved real people who were down to earth.  My wife and I just seemed to bond to the General immediately, and vice versa.  At about 5AM one Christmas morning my wife woke me and said, "Take me to the General's house, I have a gift for him".  I said, "Are you crazy, I can't take you to the General's house"!  She persisted, and I took her there.  My wife rang the door bell for several minutes until the General answered in his pajamas looking quite agitated.  My wife then handed the General a tiny little evergreen tree which she beautifully decorated by hand.  I saw tears come to the General's eyes.  I spent many days at the General's house relaxing in his yard enjoying the beautiful view of the ocean from his backyard.  How could I have let this man down.
Upon Lance Corporal Lee being delivered back to Hawaii by the FBI, the base authorities determined it was most imperative to get the weapons back that Lee had taken from the armory.  They felt this was the only way to somewhat salvage a public relations disaster with the locals in Hawaii.  In return for the weapons, Kim Dun Lee would receive a reduced sentence of, reduction to Private E-1, a Dishonorable Discharge, and four years in Leavenworth, Kansas.  He accepted this plea agreement.  This process was done expeditiously and quietly.  Kim Dun Lee was still being held in the Pearl Harbor brig.  He was now to be prepared for transportation to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
I began to quiver as I received orders to report to the Chief of Staff.  I wondered what this bastard was up to.  I was relieved of duty as the Commanding General's Secretary, but was allowed to remain in my position as Assistant Regional Director of Prisoner Security.  Somehow, I was suspicious that I was being setup.   The Colonel said to me, "Crossley, you have fucked this whole thing up, so you, and you alone, are going to take Lee to Leavenworth.  If you lose him Crossley, don't come back"!!!  I was petrified, I thought, "What, no backup, no partner"!!!  This is a setup!  That sonofabitch!!!
I pondered on how I was going to handle this extremely dangerous man who is a martial arts expert.  For the first time I decided to arm myself with a .45 caliber pistol.  I proceeded to the Pearl Harbor brig.  Upon my arrival at Pearl Harbor I had decided that Lee would in fact never make it to Leavenworth alive.  I would shoot and kill Lee and say that he was attempting to escape.  All I needed was the right spot with no witnesses.  In my mind Kim Dun Lee would pay the ultimate price for ending the career of a General I loved so much, and my career as a Marine as well.  But, I was frightened over the fact of what could possibly happen on the aircraft flying back to the mainland with Lee.  The Colonel advised me that I would be taking Lee on a commercial aircraft.  This was highly unusual since Hickam Air Force base provided military flights back to the mainland almost at will.  I at least had to shoot and disable Lee prior to getting to Honolulu International Airport.  I recalled that these pilots were real liberals when it came to transporting prisoners.  If we had weapons, they stayed in the cockpit and all restraints were taken off the prisoners while on the plane.  "Fuck me", I thought, "This is all I need, to have that bastard overtake me on the aircraft and God only knows what he'd do then.
I was escorting Lee to a military vehicle just outside the front of the Pearl Harbor brig.  While enroute, Lee says to me, "Marines are nothing, I will escape from you, too".  I became enraged.  I then wrestled Lee to the ground, pulled out my pistol, chambered a round, and cocked the hammer back.  I put the barrel of this gun inside his right ear.  I was now squeezing the trigger back telling Lee, "Kiss you mother fucking ass goodbye, punk".  Suddenly, a large group of Navy and Marine brig guards were coming towards me yelling for me to stop.  I relaxed the squeeze on the trigger.  The guatrds pulled me off Lee and asked me to give my weapon to them.  I complied with their request.  Kim Dun Lee was taken back inside the Pearl Harbor brig.
I was ordered by a Senior Master Chief to return back to Kaneohe Bay.  I didn't return back to the base for approximately four hours.  I was attempting to put my emotions back together.  I still wanted Kim Dun Lee dead.  Upon my arrival back at Kaneohe Bay I was again ordered to report to the Chief of Staff. He was furious with me again.  The Colonel received a verbal report of my actions from the Senior Master Chief at the Pearl Harbor brig.  I convinced the Colonel that Kim Dun Lee had attempted to escape from me and that my actions were justified.  I further convinced the Colonel by stating to him, "Sir, do you actually think I would allow Lee to escape from our custody again, sir.  Christ sake, sir, do you have any idea what that would mean to the credibility of the Marine Corps"?  The Colonel finally agreed with me.
