The committee has already started to discuss our next reunion. A multi-year reunion has been considered. Please let us know what our thoughts are on a multi-year reunion and where we can hold it.
Please read the entry below regarding our 25 year reunion. One of the committee members ended up spending several thousand dollars on the 25th out of their own pocket.
If you know of a classmate who has passed away, please forward that information to me at GF1980@aol.com
Please send address/email/phone number confirmations and updates to me at the email address above or to one of the other committee members. Their contact information is listed below.
August 2005
Dear Gar-Field Class of 1980,
We, the class of 1980 reunion committee, were happy to organize our 25 year reunion.
As a committee, we decided to follow the format which had been successful for our previous
class reunions: a casual happy hour event on Friday evening, Saturday evening dinner dance and
Sunday family picnic. Oasis on the Waterfront (formerly Gecko's) and Locust Shade Park were
easy venues to decide on. More consideration was necessary for Saturday night. It was decided
to choose a facility that offers dining, dancing and overnight accommodations. After considering
options in the entire area, we decided on the Fairview Park Marriott for availability, easy access,
and reputation. We were not disappointed. Their facilities are fabulous, the food wonderful, and
they couldn't have been nicer to us.
The reunion itself was wonderful. Sadly, the committee has run into a major problem. We did
not have the number of people we had anticipated. We reserved a room for 200 people with the
option of more (with a graduating class of more than 700, it seemed reasonable that with spouses
we could expect at least 200 people). Unfortunately, we did not achieve that number. Based on
the guarantee, the hotel contract obligated us to a $15,000 minimum. As July approached, the
response was lower than expected, we considered canceling, but due to the $7500 cancellation
fee in the contract, we decided to go on with the event and hope for the best. Fortunately, the
hotel reduced our obligation to $10,000.
In the end, we did come up short $3,800. One of our committee members has paid our
obligation to the hotel from their own personal account (in lieu of facing legal action/legal fees).
Other committee members have also helped out with the postage, mailings, printing, park fee,
etc. Our most important goal is to reimburse our classmate the $3,800.
We are asking your help. Please consider making a contribution to help offset this deficit.
