POINT/COUNTERPOINT
The Abortion Movie
In 2006, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds signed a bill that banned nearly all abortions in the state, legislation in direct conflict with the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973. For approximately 20 years, the Conservative Movement has implemented a concerted effort to weaken and eventually decimate a woman’s right to choose. What will life be like if the Roe v. Wade decision is overturned? This was the impetus for this documentary film which explores the lives of women who undertook abortions between the mid-1940s and late-1960s. These courageous women candidly explain their life-threatening experiences with obtaining illegal abortions. Contrarily, the film probes into the pro-life movement in Marion County, Florida, which offers an alternative view point. The film, which was created locally by a woman filmmaker, Chyrisse P. Tabone, Ph.D., provides a thought-provoking and raw look into the sensitive and politically-charged issue of abortion.

Bio of Chyrisse P. Tabone, Ph.D.

By profession, Chyrisse is an environmental scientist and college instructor. She has had an interest in filmmaking since childhood. In her late-teen years, while a senior in college, she created her first documentary film “Troutculture in Venezuela.” Chyrisse traveled to Merida, Venezuela to film trout farms in the upper Andes. This was difficult feat since the only available camera was a large, heavy Sony Beta-Max video camera!
Between 2005 and 2007, Chyrisse produced and hosted a public access television show in Tampa called “Femme Forum.” The show was a live-recorded political talk show with a feminist edge. Several of the programs were devoted to showcasing non-profit groups in the community, exposing environmental racism, mistreatment of the homeless, and other activist causes. Often controversial but always cutting edge, the show was canceled in late 2007 when the County Commissioners cut the budget for public access funding, thus, squelching free speech.
The filming of “Point/Counterpoint:The Abortion Story” began in the Summer of 2006, editing was performed in the Summer of 2007, and the film was recently completed in Spring 2008. Chyrisse hopes to educate young women on how “things used to be when abortion was illegal” and demonstrate the “forces and thinking behind the pro-life movement.”
