BIO
Born 1975 in California, Cleo was exposed to music at an early age. Her mother was in a church choir,and her grandmother encouraged her singing by having piano sessions in the family den.
At the age of 4yrs. Cleo was performing in front of audiences which soon lead to in-school performances and talent shows.
By Jr. high school Cleo's influences increased from Michael Jackson, The Police,and Paul Simon to included Bob Dylan, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Bob Marley,The Allmann brothers and the Grateful Dead. Discovering her fathers old records had changed the direction her music would take, forever.
In later years, her music style took even more twists and turns when she was introduced to old blues artists like;
Robert Johnson, Son House, Charlie Patton,Lonnie Johnson,and B.B King.
Jazz/swing artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Charlie"Bird" Parker influenced
her musically."These people had complete control of their instruments".
Bob Dylan,and Stevie Wonder would play the roles of the two major influnces of the folk/pop-R&B style that Cleo was lead to. "I mostly listened to only older music,Marley,Dylan,Paul Simon,Hendrix but I couldn't ignore the absolute talent of songwriters of the time like Sting,Phil Collins,SRV,Elton John ,Peter Gabriel."
"Then came Dave[Matthews]. We were all thirsting for good music amidst a radio drought;then Dave stepped in and rained on us."
When asked by other musicians why she had little or no female inluences; even she had no true answer. "I don't know how that happend.It was Dylan who made me want to write words and Stevie then Dave that made me want to write music".
Even today she listens to dominately male artists such as John Mayer, Jack Johnson,David Gray,Rufus Wainwright,Outkast,Coldplay,Busta Rhymes,and G Love.
"There are women I enjoy; Sarah McLachlen,Aimee mann, Jann Arden, India Arie,Lauren Hill,Jill Scott,Erykah Badu,Bonnie Raitt."
"I hate gender specific music, female shmemale. I hate that people see a girl with a guitar and immediatley think Jewel.I could eat a bowl of Alphabet soup and crap out better Lyrics then Jewel".
