History of Michel Clavet

|
Michel Clavet was a sailor in the French Navy on a
ship called the La Renommee.He came over from France in 1755
and crossing the Atlantic was dramatic.En route, they had to toss
overboard a number of canon to keep from being swamped by
the swells! He may have come to Canada before 1755, but he
didn't settle then.From 1755,at least,till 1760, He was a sailor
though settled in Quebec city,champlain street. In 1760 after his
wedding,he settled at St-Vallier Quebec across the St.Laurent
from Quebec.This was due in part because the brides (Catherine
Thibault) family lived there,but most of the reason for the move
was that champlain street, on the shore at that time,had been
demolished by the British bombardment! His friends Blanchard
and Bonnet as well as others from Quebec sought refuge in
St-Vallier. Michel Clavet didn't return to Quebec afterwards.( this
first part came from Dan Lacombe)
Michel and Catherine had 11 children of which 9 grew to
adulthood. From this one family comes all of the Clavet,Clavette
and Clevette in the United States and Canada over 2,000.
Another variation is Clevett, this line comes from the area of
Sussex England,Which we are sure is linked to Clavet France but
to far back to connect.
On a personal note,To think in that time a young boy at age
about 24 left his parents to join the Navy,never to see them again.
To come to a strange country and to raise a large family
.especially at a time where the British were expelling the acadians
to the east coast,Louisiana and France. Many families where
broken up and all their possesions and land were taken.
The cajun people are a direct link to the acadians that were
exported.The pronunciation of acadian became acajun then just
cajun.
