...Continued from Volume 1, Number 3

The following is from the book DISTINGUISHED FAMILIES IN AMERICA DESCENDED FROM JAN THOMASSE VAN DYKE written by William B. Aitken, Ph.D in 1912.

This article is about Col. John Van Dyke who served in the British Navy during the American Revolution.

"As Somerset County lay in the path of the contending armies it suffered greatly. Grandmother remembered how terror-stricken they were at the news: 'The British are coming.' They saw the ominous smoke from the burning homes of their neighbors. Her mother had had the Van Dyke

silver buried. My own nurse, Susan, knew the very spot where grandfather Jack had buried it.

Grandmother said that her mother ordered one of the slaves to drive a pair of the colonel's favorite horses into the thicket of a nearby woods until the British army had passed; but neither man nor horses were ever seen again. The British came. The house swarmed with them. Grandmother Houghton said, 'Mother was a dignified, handsome woman, I can see her now as she stood in front of the house, we children clinging to her, the terrified slaves behind her, saying 'I wish to speak to the commanding officer! ' He dashed up on a spirited horse. I thought his gorgeous trappings of red and gold were wonderful. 'Sir,' she said, ' my husband Col. Van Dyke is in the British service. I demand your protection!' The officer thundered an awful oath, commanding every Hessian to come out or he would run him through with his sword. Instantly they scrambled out of every door and window. Then she said, 'Now sir, you and your officers come in. When my servants have served you they will give what is left to your men.'" Ibid., p. 209

"Colonel John Van Dyke was taken prisoner by the Americans and confined in Philadelphia, Pa. His faithful wife never rested until she had him exchanged for an American officer who was in prison at New Brunswick. I have seen her clear strong signature 'Rebecca Van Dyke' in connection with this successful appeal for the freedom of her husband. The papers are in the State House at Trenton, N. J." Ibid., p. 210

"After the war, Col. John Van Dyke remained sometime in England. He was entertained by the nobility especially by Lord Chatham, William Pitt the younger. He resided for a while in Nova Scotia and then returned to his home in Harlingen." Ibid., p. 210

"That Col. Van Dyke loved the little children was proved by his gift of about five acres on the opposite side of the road from the Harlingen Church for a school and play-ground and by the terms of the deed prohibited forever its use for any other purpose. He was actively interested in education. His public-spirited benevolent life did much to live down the approbrium of 'Troy John,' and to prove that he was loyalist, from no lack of love to his country and kindred, but because he could not violate his oath of allegiance to the King of England."

From page 296 of the book FAMILIES AND HISTORY OF GIBSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE TO 1989, I found the following:

"In 1892 William Henry Stinson married Mary Catherine VanDyke (1872-1963), the daughter of Angus Marshall VanDyke and Elizabeth Barham. Hulda VanDyke, a sister to Mary Catherine, married Dr. James Cary Stinson. Several of the VanDykes are buried in the Marl Bluff cemetery in Henderson County, Tn. William Henry Stinson, his wife, and daughters Almeda and Flora are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Milan, Tn."

I have just located the following concerning Edward Daniel VanDyke, son of Burgin Baxter VanDyke:

A newspaper clipping with no date but I assume that it dates to about 1956 and would be from the SHELBY DAILY STAR, Shelby, North Carolina: "NEWS OF LOCAL MEN IN SERVICE: "...and husband of the former Miss Selma J. Teats of Pensacola, Fla., was a part of a four plane detachment from Air-Anti Submarine Squadron 30, which participated in anti-submarine warfare demonstrations at Key West, Fla. June 2. VanDyke is an air crewman with the Squadron which is home based at Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. Before entering the service in May 1954 VanDyke attended Mooresboro High School (Mooresboro, North Carolina)."

A newspaper clipping from an unknown paper: "CONSCIENTIOUSNESS PAYS OFF THREE VS-30 MEN DISCOVER. Spotting a gasoline leak before a plane went out on a training hop a VS-30 lineman prevented a possible serious accident as he called the aircraft back just prior to takeoff. Edward VanDyke, AD3, while the squadron was on a training cruise at Key West, noted a leakage on the fuel line and ordered the plane in for a check. Despite the fact that the leak was unnoticed byothers checking the aircraft VanDyke's alertness was proven when the leadkage was uncovered. VanDyke was one of three squadron members who were commended this week by CDR A. H. Reid, Commanding Officer of the squadron."

The original "Letter of Appreciation" was signed by P. L. Ruehrmund, Acting Commanding Officer. In the letter he wrote "It is believed that your alertness and conscientious performance of duty probably averted a dangerous situation and possibly averted a disastrous one."

"PUPILS REPORT CARD, CLEVELAND COUNTY SCHOOLS 1945-1946: Dudley VanDyke (Edward Daniel): Reading - all A's; Language - all A's; Spelling - 4 A's and 2 A+'s; Writing - 4 A's and 2 B's; Arithmetic - 3 A's and 3 B's; Conduct - 1 C, 2 B's and 3 A's. Comments by the teacher: First period: Dudley is a fine boy, but he talks out of place a great deal. He is improving in this. He tries hard to overcome his faults. I enjoy working with him. Third period: Dudley still talks out of place. He bothers the children close by. He is such a fine boy otherwise. I hope he will improve in this soon."

The teacher did not make any comments during the other periods and the report card was signed by Mrs. B. B. VanDyke. Dudley was promoted from the third grade to the fourth.

On June 4, 1996, Collyn Youngman in response to an earlier query about Sarah VanDyke who married John Pierson. Collyn wrote "...I am happy to report that she was my 5th Great Grandmother." She has also provided the following information about John and Sarah:

"John T. Pierson born 24 May 1758, occupation: Farmer, Stock raiser, married May 1776, Sarah Van Dyke, born 16 Nov 1761, died 27 May 1830, Morrow County, Ohio. John died 11 Feb 1827, Martinsburg, Knox County, OH, buried: Presbyterian, Martinsburg,OH (Lot 67, grave 1)."

"Military: Private (From Morristown), First a Minuteman, afterwards entering in New Jersey Continental Line, Colonel Elias Dayton. Enlisted for the war, transferred with Captain Richard Cox's company to First Regiment, Continental Line, Colonel Matthias Ogden, January 1, 1781. He served to the close of the Revolutionary War."

"Wounded in the hip by a musket bullet at the battle of Germantown. His wound never completely healed and caused him to use crutches in later life."

"He was a member of Washington's Life Guard during the New Jersey Campaign. Washington's Life Guard was a distinct organization of picked men. 180 were selected from all ranks of the Army for good character and soldierly bearing. Their motto was conquer or die. Height requirements were 5'8" to 5'10", age 20-30, finely formed, robust construction, well limbed, formed for activity and men of established character and sobriety and fidelity. Neat dressers with good carriage and pride in personal appearance. Had to be American born. Were men of property with family connections. Guards were eligible for the badge of merit. He (John Pierson) told his daughter that he was proud of the fact that he was for six weeks a member of Washington's Life Guards and he frequently guarded the tent and the person of George Washington."

"He stated to his daughter that he left Essex Co., NJ on the Lexington Alarm for the relief of Boston with two brothers named Carmichael and a man named McFadden and another named Nelson. He served in the battle of Bunker Hill where his companions were wounded but were brought off the fields and carried to safely home where all enlisted in the NJ troops."

She obtained the above information from: (1) "Adjutant Gen. Wm. S. Stryker's Cert. of Service in NJ Troops and Officers and Men on NJ in the Revolutionary War p. 266 and 720" (2) "Pension Blwt 8646 issued 6/11/1789 to Matthias Denman assignee. No papers." (3) "DAR 43887, 48897"

James Chruchyard of Costa Mesa, CA recently sent me the following: "Hendrick VanDyck certainly had a temper - he started the 'Peach War' with the Indians in September 1655 by shooting an Indian woman who was helping herself to a peach from his orchard. Concerning his origins, his partonymic was Thomasse, so his father was Thomas Van Dijck."

In some cases when a person appears in a later census record and he appears to be the same person in an earlier census, that person is only listed once. This will account for some birth information being listed as later that the census year. There is a very good chance that many of the above people have been listed twice since most of the VanDyke's in Virginia from 1880 through 1920 were living in Tazewell or Buchanan Counties.
