I know who most of the ones on the 1870 census belong to, but I need to get their family information. This would indicate that he is exempt from taxes. reasons?? Obviously not too old, as he is fathering children in this time period. Other reasons for exemption: (1) soldier; (2) owns property in another county and pays taxes in county of residence only; and (3) being a political employee are some of the reasons for exemption. Perhaps John is residing in another county and merely owns property in Russell County?? Or perhaps he is still serving in a militia unit and is thus exempt? Ideas to consider for future research. Contributed by Beverly Tracy. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The following is the family tree of Beverly Tracy and was contributed by her: 1. John VanDike b. 1750-1760, m. Charlotte, d. before 1819, Tazewell County, VA. John died 1820-1830, Tazewell County, VA. "John Vandike would have been born in about 1755. I do not know if he was born in America or not. He raised his family in the wilderness of western Virginia in the area of present day Cedar Bluff, Virginia. His land was located on Indian Creek and the Clinch River. He settled there in 1775. The land was located on the south side of Indian Creek and thedate of settlement is proven by the 1753 to 1797 Washington County Grant Book." "During the period of time that John Vandike lived the Counties of western Virginia changed several times. New counties were fromed from old ones, so land records showed that people were in several different counties, although the people never moved. In 1786 it shows that John Vandike was living in Russell County. In 1793 he was living on Indian Creek and the Clinch River of Tazewell County. He received this land from the Commonwealth of Virginia by a land Patent. He was also granted another land Patent in 1799. These land patents were listed as beint located in Washington County, Virginia. The surveys for these land patents were made in 1783 and they gave measurements fromJohn Vandike's corner. The Commissioners for the district of Washington and Montgomery counties certified that John Vandile was living there in 1775." "John's wife was named Charlotte. They had four sons, James, Charles, John Jr., and Israel. They also had three daughters, Charity, Nancy, and Sally. There may have been more children, but these are the only ones that I found a trace of. Charity married Jeramiah Claypool. I found a death record for her saying she died in 1855 and that she was 64 years old so she would have been born in 1791. Her son Jeramiah Claypool Jr. witnessed the death record. The death record gave her father as John Vandike and Charity Vandike. I believe that this was a mistake and that someone wrote Charity instead of Charlotte. nancy and Sally are listed in the Tazewell marriage records. There are no other Vandikes living in Tazewell at this time so they have to be the daughters of John and Charlotte. Nancy married Ruben Pruett and Sally married Henry Blankenship." "Of John's four sons; James was born about 1785. James married Susannah Moore between 1805 and 1807. The minister left a list of marriages he performed during that time, but failed to list actual dates of marriages. james remained in Tazewell until after the 1830 census. He remained on the Tazewell Personal Tax list until 1839. I believe that he moved to Boone County, Missouri at this time. Charles Vandike was born around 1786. He married Elizabeth Moore on April 6, 1809. He fought in the War of 1812. He lived in Tazewell near Cedar Bluff until his death February 25, 1833." "Charles Vandike is my great, great, great grandfather." "John Vandike Jr. was born about 1789. He married Nancy Mitchell, April 11, 1833. I do not knonw if John Jr. lived all of his life in Tazewell, as I have found no trace of an estate for him there. Israel Vandike was born in 1801. He married Polly Beavers in 1822. Israel remained in Tazewell all of his life and his will is on record in Tazewell." "John Vandike and his neighbors, one of which was Hezekiah Whitt, petitioned the state of Virginia to form the new county of Tazewell from land taken from Russell and Wythe counties. It took six petitions before they got the county of Tazewell fromed. There was a petition in 1793, 1795, 1797, 1798 and 1799. John Vandike signed all of the petitions, but the one that was in the year 1797. In 1798 his son James signed the petition, and in 1799 James, Charles and John Jr., also signed the petition." "John and his sons names appeared several times in the Tazewell Order Book Number One. James was a witness in court in 1803, and John Jr., James, and Charles testified that Hezekiah and Rachel Whitt deeded land to their son James Whitt in 1808. Also in 1808 John and James were among a group to view a road and report back about road changes." "John and Charlotte Vandike deeded each of their 3 older sons, James, Charles and John Jr., 69 acres of land in 1808. Each son paid the sum of $1000 to their father for their land. This was the land that John Sr. had received from the Commonwealth of Virginia." "John's sons, James, Charles, and John Jr. were all members of the 2nd Battalion of the 112th Reg. of the Militia of Tazewell County. On April 26, 1809 James was appointed Ensign. Charles and John Jr. fought in the War of 1812." "On June 11, of 1819 John deeded Israel Vandike 69 acres of ground for the sum of $350. Unlike the other deeds, Charlotte Vandike's name does not appear on this deed, which leads me to believe that Charlotte died before before this time. Also the 1820 census only list John Sr. and two sons." "John Vandike Sr. was listed on the Federal Census of 1820 as 45 and over. He does not appear on the 1830 Federal Census as he would have had to be at least 55 years old and there is not anyone listed that age. Since all of his family were still in Tazewell it is unlikely that he moved at this time, therefore I believe that he died during this time." Children: i Nancy VanDike b. VA, m. Charles VanDike b. about 1786, Virginia, m. 5 Mar 1807, in Washington county, VA, Elizabeth Moore. Charles died 25 Feb 1833, Tazewell County, VA. "He grew to manhood in the western part of Baptist Valley on the Clinch River and Indian Creek. The family lived near Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County, Virginia." "Charles and his brother John were members of a company of Light Infantry commanded by John Cecil. They appeared on the muster roll of the 2nd Bat. of the 112 Regiment. Charles and John were also listed as veterans of the War of 1812." "Charles enlisted in the War of 1812 at Jeffersonville on September 14th, 1813. Charles served as a private in Lieutenant Rees B. Thompson's company of Infantry from the 112 Regiment of Virginia Militia which was attached to the 4th Regiment of Virginia Militia. The 4th Regiment was serving at Norfolk, Virginia which was 590 miles away from Jeffersonville, Virginia. The muster roll shows that the men of the 4th Regiment were paid 8 dollars per months. From September 14th to October 15th, Charles received 8 dollars and 26 cents. The muste roll from September 14 to October 15 also shows that Charles was sick." "Charles then served under Captain James Michie. He was still attached to the 4th Regiment of the Virginia Militia. Lt. Col. Koontz was the commanding officer. Charles served for 1 month and 15 days and received 12 dollars. On January 14, 1814 he received 16 dollars for 2 months of service and on March 12, 1814 he was paid 18 dollars and 93 cents for 2 months and 11 days of service." "Charles Vandike died February 25, 1833 at his home in Tazewell County, Virginia. Elizabeth Vandike applied for Bounty land in 1854 and received 40 acres. She reapplied for more land according to the length of time that Charles had served in the War of 1812 and received 40 more acres for a total of 80 acres of Bounty Land. Her original Bounty Land number was 98930. At the time Elizabeth applied for the land she was 60 years old." "Elizabeth Vandike continued to live in Tazewell County and she raised her family in the west end of Baptist Valley near Cedar Bluff. Her son Rees lived with her until her death. All of Charles Vandike's children sold their share of theirfather's land to their brother Rees." Third Generation 3. John VanDike b. about 1810, Tazewell County, VA, m. March 1835, in Tazewell County, VA, Ascenah Whitt. John died 1 Sep 1863, St. Louis, Missouri. "John and Ascenah lived in Tazewell until 1843. He does not appear on the 1840 census, but he is on the personal property tax list from 1834 to 1843. John and Ascenah's first four children, Martha Jane, Charles, Mary, and Griffy, were born in Tazewell County." "In 1844 John and Ascenah, like so many others, decided to leave Tazewell and head west with a large group of settlers, including Griffy Whitt, Ascenah's father. They came by horseback, probalby through the Cumberland Gap, up the Wilderness Road, through the mountains to Missouri. Ascenah had 4 small children at the time the family left Virginia and headed for Missouri. Griffy Vandike, her youngest was two at the time." "Some of the family think that John and Ascenah first moved to Chillicothe, Missouri and that their child, Israel, was born there in Livingston County. The family did live in Daviess County, Missouri in October of 1848 as John bought land in Harrison County Missouri and stated that his address was Daviess County. At this time he purchased 160 acres for $600." "John Vandike enlisted in the Civil War. He was first in the Grundy County Battalion under the Commander Creighton. His age was shown as 51. He enrolled October 8, 1861 at Edinburg, Missouri. On the remarks it shows he was reduced from a corporal to a private and honorably discharged on February 2, 1862 at Chillicothe, Missouri. He re-enlisted July 26, 1862 for three years. He was a private with Company H, 23 Regiment of the Missouri Volunteers. His age at this time was stated as 44, so he must have lied about his age when he re-enlisted. He may have been to old for the army to accept him, so he lied and said he was younger. His physical shows that he had brown hair, hazel eyes, and was 6' 1/2" tall. He served under Captain Aichols at this time." "Like so many others John Vandike became ill and died from typhoid fever while serving in the Civil War. He died alone at the Marine Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri on September 1, 1863. He is buried in Jefferson Barracks Nation Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri." "Three of John's sons, Griffy, Charles, and Israel also served in the Civil War. Charles Vandike also lost his life during the Civil War." "Like so many others, Ascenah was left to raise her family by herself. She applied for a widows pension and received $8 per month to raise her family on. Ascenah could not read or write as she made her mark on the papers she signed. Her address at the time she aplied for the pension was Edinburg, Missouri. She died July 8, 1882 in Harrison County and is buried at Mitchell Cemetery at Melbourne, Missouri." Fourth Generation 4. John Vandike b. 10 Apr 1847, Daviess Co., Missouri, m. 15 Feb 1872, in Grundy Co., Missouri, Frances Ellen Cole. John died 31 Mar 1924, Wray, Yuma Co., Colorado. "When his father died in 1863, John received 53 acres of ground from his father's estate. He also received one gray fily valued at $75, 2 two year old steers valued at $26, and a cow and a calf valued at $12.50 for a total value of $113.50 for personal goods. This was $2.13 to much for his share so he had to pay his brother William that amount to even up the shares and settle the estate." "John Vandike married Frances Ellen Cole, daughter of Solomon Turpin Cole and Emmaline Brown. They were married February 15, 1872 in Grundy County, Missouri. The Coles lived at Brimson, Missouri a short distance from the Vandikes." "On October 15, 1885 John Vandike homesteaded in Chase County, Nebraska. He filed a claim on the NEQ of Section 22, Township 7N 40W. The application number was 4481. In May of 1892 John went to file for his final patent at the McCook Land Office. He had to pay $4.00 for filing cost. His final patent number was 2540." "At the time John filed his homestead claim he was living in Grubbtown, Missouri in Grundy County. He was 44 years old. John first went to Nebraska himself in April of 1886 and built his house. He started living on the property April 16, 1886. He then went back to Missouri for his family between April 17, 1886 and October 6, 1886. He moved his family and all of his stock to Nebraska at this time." "John improved his homestead during the next years. His house was of sod and was 16 X 18 feet wide with a 16 X 30 foot wing added on. He built a 30 X 55 foot stable out of stone and grout. He had a hen house, and a cave. John broke out 100 acres of sod to farm. He had raised 6 crops by the time he proved up on his claim. He also had fenced in 100 acres of grass land. His improvements were valued at $500." "At the same time John finished filing on his homestead claim he bought 160 acres of land from William Eddington and his wife of Iowa. He had to pay $800 for this land and assume a $300 mortgage with interest of 10%. Chase County Historians say that shortly after this in the 1890 years there was a huge drught and most of the early settlers were forced to leave Chase County. I would guess that this was probably what happened to John and Ellen Vandike as theyleft Chase County and moved back to Harrison County, Missouri." "In April of 1901 John had moved back to Nebraska and was living in Harlan County, Nebraska. His brother Griffy Vandike lived at Harlan. Chase County Nebraska records show that he lost his homestead land as well as the land he purchased in Chase County. He released the title of land to the Equitable Land Company of Nebraska for the sum of $1. The description of the land they received from his was the N 1/2 of Section 22, Township 7 N, Range 40W." "John lost his wife, Frances Ellen, January 26, 1906. She is buried at Huntly, Nebraska. I am not sure where the John and Ellen were living at the time of her death. I searched Nebraska records for her death, but have not found them." "In May of 1906 shortly after Frances Ellen's death, John was living in Dundy County, Nebraska. At the time he purchased land from Elbertt Munger and his wife of Iowa. The land was located in Yuma County, Colorado. He gave $900 for the NWQ of Section 15, Township 35, Range 42 West." "In July of 1906 John Vandike bought the SEQ of Section 4, Township 2 S, Range 42W. This land was also located in Yuma County, Colorado. He bought it from G. Muller of Iowa and paid $1000 for it." "I don't know if John moved to Colorado at this time or not. I would almost think so as his sons, Ellis and Elmus homesteaded ground in that area of Yuma County at that time. They had homesteads located on the Kansas and Colorado state lines, close to where their father's land was located." "In January of 1910 land deeds show that John Vandike, widower, was living in Harlan County. At this time he sold Albert Vandike the NEQ of Section 15, Township 3 S, Range 42 W in Yuma County, Colorado for the sum of $749." "In 1912 Yuma County land records show that John was living in Yuma County. At this time he purchased his children's share of their grandfather, Solomon Cole's land that was located in Missouri. Solomon had left his land to each of his children and since Frances Ellen was already dead, he left it to her children." "In April of 1915 John Vandike of Yuma County sold the E 1/2 of the SWQ of Section 2, Township 1N, Range 45W to Russell Hecks for the sum of $400." "John Vandike lived in the Armel Community for the last years of his life. He was located on the Colorado and Kansas State lines. He first lived in a sod house. Thismay have been on the property when he bought the land. Lated he built a large rock house where he lived. He must have hauled the rocks from the canyons to the North of where he lived." "John was a farmer all of his life. His son, Noah, lived with him on his place the last few years of his life. John died March 31, 1924, at Wray, Colorado. He was taken back to Huntly, Nebraska and buried with Frances Ellen at the Bainbridge Cemetery." Children: i Emmaline Vandike b. 22 Feb 1873, Harrison Co., Missouri, m. (1) Julius Houtman, m.
