Eugenio Fedeli Aug 05, 2004 16:39 esfedeli@aol.com My wife and I are not Sambucesi but are happy to be a part of this club by spreading the word about your website and the great work done by you Christine Mule Maglio and Giuseppe Caccioppo from Sambuca. We enjoyed have the Mayor and people from Sambuca visit our city in 2000 for our Festa Italiana, the year we celebrated with our theme "The year of the Women". Sep 28, 2004 22:45 kjmannisto@aol.com I have many surnames from Sambuca as well as other areas in Sicily. Please go to members list on the home page to view some of my lines. My Sambuca line came to the USA via Louisana. They eventually traveled to Chicago and finally made their way to Rockford, IL. One line I am trying to fill in is my Montalbano line. My great uncle was killed by the mob in 1917 in Chicago. If anyone has Montalbano relatives that were in Chicago, I would love to compare notes.Grazie

Oct 18, 2004 21:27 WillieOz@Hotmail.com This is a wonderful site. I enjoyed viewing the visits by the Rockford Sambucesi (I don't speak Italian). My family surnames include Lazio (mother: Maria Lucia Lazio), Priola, Giovingo, Pernacciaro, and a few others that I haven't made any connection to. The site has given me an incentive to pursue my Sicilian roots with vigor. My grandfather, Giovanni Lazio arrived in New Orleans, La. October 30, 1897 on the SS Montebello with 928 other countrymen. I have a copy of the Passenger List obtained from the National Archives many years ago. It has been transcribed and I believe is on Roots Web. Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Bill Osborne Rockford, Illinois

Jan 18, 2005 10:45 kdigiov@tampabay.rr.com I'm researching my children's heritage on their father's side. The family is from Sambuca on the DiGiovanni side; Sam DiGiovanni/ DiGiovanna married Margaret Armato in Sambuca, thier son Michael DiGiovanni married Mary Pumilia in Sambuca, and emmigrated to LA with 2 children, Sam and Margaret. He later married Rose Lazio, moved to Rockford, and had 4 more DiGiovanni children: Mary, Joe, Anthony, and Angeline. Anthony is my children's grandfather. Would appreciate any help on DiGiovanni/ DiGiovanna, Lazio, Armato, Pumilia. Also Damico/ D'amico and Martarano on the maternal side. One burning question I have is what exactly prompted the Sicilians from Tangipahoa Parish to migrate to Rockford, IL,(of all places) as so many seem to have done? Thanks.

Jan 23, 2005 23:30 mapeterson@cox.net This is wonderful site. Like Toni Cacioppo,my cousin, our Grandfather, Martin Cacioppo was born in Sambuca. He died in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1990 at the age of 96. He had retired after 50 years as a grocery owner and butcher. His Italian sausage was well know. Sixteen of the US relatives went together to Sambuca in 2001. We have 96 relatives in Sambuca. Other family names that we are related to are: Armato (Martin, a grocer in Ft. Dodge, Iowa,& Rockford, IL.) Spizzirri (Babe of Chicago), Frigaletto (Silvestor of Chicago). For your information, there was a Paul Maggio in Fort Dodge, Iowa, that was a Dentist.

Surname is, Anastasia Guzzardo (also called Stella), born 8 September 1873 in Sambuca Zabut Italia. She had (3) brothers. I believe their names were George, Albert, and Antonio Guzzardo. My grandfather Antonio Merlo was born in 1865. (Husband to my grandmother above.) I'm currently planning a trip to Italy and Sicily in September 2005. My maiden name is Curatolo, and my dad was born in Strasati, Sicily. That's just south of Marsala. I'm planning to visit both Sambuca and Strasati/Marsala, that is graveyards, court house, and anything I can find to learn more about my family. The information that this website has provided is invaluable. Thanks very much for all the work and time devoted to such a worthwhile pursuit. I can be reached at (2) e-mail addresses. Feb 09, 2005 23:15 mjcbug52@AOL.COM My name is Michael Ciaccio. I live in St. Louis, MO. I am looking for my relatives in Sambuca. My great-grandparents came to the U.S. around the turn of the 1900's (I think). I found birth certificates for my grandfather which states my greatgrand father's name was Joseph and my his wife's name was Josephine. They settled in Willisville, Illinois. I think they came to the U.S. through New Orleans. I went to Sambuca in April of 2004. I had very little success. I had help from the local police. We went door to door looking for anyone who might remember but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated as I am planning another trip there in the future.

David L. Cates http://cimiotta-cates.com/index.html Mar 02, 2005 08:48 dlcatesoo@msn.com Just like many more before me have said, this site is a great treasure find. My grandfather, Antonino Cimiotta, was born in Sambuca Sabut 1885. He entered the US thru New York at 17 years old in 1902. His first stop was Brooklyn to a brother-in-law's home. I think the address was 21 Lorimer Street. The household name was Ubbena, maybe. His father, Luciano Cimiotta (1849-1929) was born in Palermo; his mother, Rosa Bila (1857_1904) was from Sambuca. All of their children were born in Sambuca, Girolamo (1875-1876), Girolamo (1877-1898), Michela (1880-?), Antonino (1884-1945), Giuseppe (1887-1910), Simone (1891-1907), Giuseppa (1894-1899), Salvatore (1898-?), and Gizolama (1900-1900). I'm not sure of the spelling for all the names. Luciano's first wife rosa died 1904 and Luciano married again to Giovanna Randazzo, born 1855. Girolamo Cimiotta and Michela Zummo were the parents of Luciano Cimiotta; Antomino Bila and Giuseppe Faleo were the parents of rosa Bila. I'm not positive of the spelling for the names, male virses female names are nort clear to me and the document I have originated in Sicily, the print is not clear either. My Cimiotta grandfather married Minnie Blanche Simons (or Simmons); her parents were Frank Simons and Etta Mae Cromer. These families lived in Illinois. Please mail or e-mail me if you know of these families.

Apr 11, 2005 12:32 jea_pe@yahoo.com Visited Sambuca Di Sicilia last week. What an amazing place to see and experience, especially when you know you ancestors walked many of the same streets. I discovered that my great grandfather (Castenzio Amodeo) and my great grandmother (Marianina Giacone) lived across the street from one another and that 13 Corso Umberto faces Cortile Amodeo. I also want to mention how helpful the people in the town hall were...scrambling around and digging through old records. Although they did not find much in the short time I was there...I appreciate their efforts very much. If anyone has information on the surnames Amodeo, Giacone or Lombardo I would appreciate hearing about it.

Apr 12, 2005 21:03 dfull@charter.net This is a great site! I am only an on-again, off-again researcher of my maternal grandfather's family - Catalanello. He was born in 1899 in Houma, LA son of Giuseppe and Rosaria (Ciaccio). Giuseppe's (b. 1872) parents were Calogero and Josephine (Capara). Rosaria (b. 1878) was the daughter of Calogero and Grazia (Catalanello). The families moved up to LaSalle, IL between 1905-1908 and remained there. I am trying to make a connection between my family and the remaining Catalanellos in Sambuca. Hope to hear from someone!

Joseph Abene (Abbene)
May 18, 2005 12:54 abenejoseph@netscape.net I have ancestry from Sambuca Sicily. My Greatgranparents came to the United States, the first time, in 1899. My Greadgrandfather: Gioacchino (Jack) Abbene My Greatgrandmother: Rosa Abbene Their Children: Antonio (Anthony) Abbene Francesca (Francis) Abbene Giannina (Ginny) Abbene Giovanno (Joseph) Abene Frank Abbene My greatgrandparents made several trips back and forth, from Sicily to United States of America.(Starting in 1899) What I was told is that my greatgrandfather had alot of land and was trying to sell it. Finally around 1907 the remaining land was sold, not for money, but for Olive Oil. He shipped the Olive Oil back to the US, there he sold the goods. With the money they moved to New Orleans, Louisanna and then finally to Tampa Florida, where he opened a Furniture Store. The Story for my last missing one "B", is that his full name plus Furniture Store would not fit on the marque so he removed one "B". That's what I know to date. Of the original family members only Giannina (Ginny) remains. Also, I'm in a straight line of first named childern with it being "Joseph". As far back as can be remembered there has been a Jack then Joseph then Jack and so on, for Fathers naming their sons. Jul 19, 2005 09:30 thefoodguy@yahoo.com What a wonderful effort, Thank you. My grandfather Gaetano was born in Sambuca Zabut in 1881 or 82. My grandmother (Acquaviva) was from Monreale, near Palermo. His mother Rosa Pendola, and father Biaggio Recca. Best as I can tell all Recca's emmigrated to the US by 1915 and settled as follows: Salvatore (New York), Giaccomo (California), Maria Audenzia (New York), Ignazio, (New York), Gaetano (New York, Chigago, then Detroit), Calogero (Chicago). Step brothers (2) Barilli's went to Rockford, Ill. I believe. I traveled to Sambuca in 2002 with my mother Maria, and her sister Carmella and we found it to be a wonderful place. We met some relatives on the Pendola side who own a little Pasticceria. It was sublime! How amazing to click on "Passenger ships to Boston", and see my Grandfathers name along with my great uncle Giaccomo and his family, with their address near the Brooklynn bridge in New York! Giaccomo traveled back and forth many times, but I never knew about the Boston arrival! Molto Grazi!! Ciao Gaetano

Jan 22, 2006 16:03 patriciajmarino@msn.com Hi, my cousin, Jim Marino, told me about this site and we are very excited that such a site exists allowing us to do such specific research. I am interested in finding if we have any living relatives in Sambuca; we have heard from family stories that our great grandparents house still stands there. My grandparents were Maria and Peter Marino, my grandmother's parents were Maria (or Marienza) Pumiglia and Joseph Azzara. My paternal great grandparents were Grace and Jasper Marino and my grea great grandmother's maiden name was Cippola. It would be helpful if anyone has any information pertaining to them. Thank you so much. Pat Marino

Feb 10, 2006 16:08 marino.j@comcast.net I discovered this site last month after my daughter called from Italy wanting some information about the towns in Sicily where my grandparents were from. Because of her schedule she was only able to visit Palermo and did not have the time to visit Sambuca or Caccamo. This is truly a wonderful site and I have had a great time reading everyone's history. It brings back so many fond memories of my family. They were all great loving and proud people who set a positive example for all their children. I related this site to my Cousin Pat who already checked in. My paternal Grandparents, Maria(Azzara)Marino (1874-1948) and Pietro Marino(1874-1918) came form Sambuca in the late 1890's. They left Sicily at different times arriving in New Orleans. My Grandmother went back to Sambuca for a short time and then returned to America. After a few years in Louisiana they migrated up to Chicago with their children. They had 10 Children: Grace, Jasper,Joseph,Lawrence, Mary,Alex, Nick, Peter, Lena and Francis. Grace, Jasper, Joseph were born in Sanbuca. Mary I think might have been born there also. Lawrence was born in Louisiana and the rest in Chicago. My paternal Great Grand Parents(I Think), were Grace(Cippola) Marino and Jasper Marino. My maternal Great Grand Parents(I Think), were Marenza Pumigila and Joseph Azzara. My maternal grandparents were Catarina(1882-1939) and Nocisio Anselmo(1878-1940) from Caccamo, Sicily. Their Children were Santa, Charles, Henry, Rose, John and Nicky. Not much in known about the Caccamo side. Jim Marino

Apr 24, 2006 20:24 theresam@core.com My first trip to Sambuca was in1980 when I visited the city and was able to obtain the following information: My great grandfather was Dominico Montalbano who was born in Sambuca Di Zabut in 1825. His wife was Dorthea Maggio who was born in 1836. The Regester of Deeds informed me that a fire in the period around 1840 distroyed the older records. I believe a possible revolution in Sambuca at that time. My grandfather was Anthony Montalbano and he was born on May 19, 1873, also in Sambuca. He married Maria Udenzia (Armato) in 1898. Brothers and sisters possibly include: Lillian, Maria Antonia, Mariano or Maria ?, Paulo, Nicolo, Pietro, and My grandfather,Antonio. My father was Dominick A Montalbano and was born in 1901 in Centlerville, La. Brothers and sister include: Nicolas, Michael, Samuel, and Odilia (Ida). My grandfather possibly came into the United States on the SS Tartar Prince with other members of his family. His family worked in the Centerville, La. area and eventually bought a small grocery storfe in town and then a farm in Bayou Sale, nearby. During the depression part of the family moved to New Orleans or to Chicage or to Rockford, Illinois. My wife and I will be visiting Sambuca the second or third week of June, this year. Thanking you in advance, Yours truly, Leonard J. Montalbano

Apr 29, 2006 20:38 fgiovingo@charter.net This website has been a wonderful find for me. I have a cousin that has done a family history and he believed because of some documents he uncovered that the true spelling of our name is Giovinco. Upon looking at the birth records for 1887 and found my great grandfather and lo and behold the surname is Giovinco and not Giovingo. The name seems to have been changed some time after the birth of my grandfather. He was born in the United States and on his baptismal certificate the surname is Giovinco. We believe that since my great grandparents could not read or write that the name was misspelled on a legal document thus changing the name. It was really great to come across this website to truly be able to find out the true spelling of our name and also find out for certain the year in which my great grandfather was born. It had been thought he was born in 1883 but was born in 1879. His name is Leonardo Giovinco. Again thanks again for the web site.

Aug 03, 2006 15:27 ravenlucy@netzero.net I am very excited to view this web page today and to read all the visitors who have passed by. I have been working on Italian citizenship for me and my daughters since late 2002 and was at the Los Angeles Italian Consulate on Tuesday. This morning we received our pas Federal Express and are estatic. In February of 2002 I made my first tour/trip to Italy and was able to take a taxi to Sambuca so I could have a glimpse of the city where my grandfather, Antonino Rinaldo, was born and lived until he was 17. My nana, Mary Sparacino, lived in Sambuca when she was a little but was born in Chicago. They spent the remainder of their lives in Rockford Illinos where I was born. After much research I returned to Sambuca to years later and was able to meet many of my relatives and spend more time in Sambuca. What a blessing this journey has been. We now live in S.California and will visit Sambuca again in a few years.

Oct 29, 2006 00:57 jpm@atvci.net Thanks for your tremendous interest and effort that make this site unique. My grandfather was a "Pietro Armato" (seems to be a common Sambuccan name). I toured sicily two years ago but only was able to see the outskirts of sambucca. I plan on returning to Sicily and visit sambucca and caccamo where the Morella's (army papers name is "muriello") are from. There seems to be a connection between sambuccisi who came through the new orleans port and many who eventually settled in chicago and rockford, ill. Such was the scenario with my mother's family. Her father worked the cane fields of south louisiana and eventually ended up in chicago. Many of her extended armato family live in rockford. I think a pocket of immigrants from sambucca settled in chicago and rockford and the word got out that there were better jobs there and many from lousiana moved for that purpose. I found sicily charming and the countryside beautiful but like in southern italy time has stood still for centuries. I know my mother had an aunt who recently died at 98 who married a cacciopo, which appears to be another name native to sambucca..

Jan 25, 2007 13:08 sangelo32@hotmail,com I have used your club for the last 5 yrs and once we spoke on the phone. I have helped many of your members re: sambuca surnames. I have recorded every vital record (birth, marriage and death) of my five direct ancestor surnames of Ciaccio, Cannova, DiPrima, Montalbano and Triolo. This data allows me to tie into many other surnames in Sambuca. I have hit a brickwall trying to locate the children of two sisters, my IC4R Margharita and Angela Ciaccio who married two brothers Paola and Pietro Francesco LaMarca. Without again going through all the micrfilms I have already reviewed I am hoping I can get some help on this. I sent you and club members an e-mail on Jan 20 but have received no responses as of this date. I fear maybe my email program is not working properly. Can you sugagest any connection I can make? Do you need more info.? Thanks: Sal Angelo

However, there may be a connection near Chicago because there is some oral history that indicates a visit there about 1911. Any information would be appreciated.

May 14, 2007 11:00 tjmangogna@sprynet.com My paternal grandfather was born in Sambuca Zabut. According to his gravestone he was born on October 28, 1874. In looking at the birth indices available (there is none for 1874) a Vito Mangogna was born in 1875 but there is also another entry for Vito Mangogna in 1879. Both have the same father listed, Sebastiano. There were other Mangogna's born during the period covered by the indices about 9 or 10 total and I would have to believe they are all related. Several had a father named Vincenzo. Anyway, I was wondering if it was possible to get copies of birth records and if so how much it would cost. Do you do that kind of thing? If not do you know who does? Thanks for responding to me. Thomas J. Mangogna

Paula A. Cottone
Jul 01, 2007 11:26 hpkcommish@aol.com My name is Paula Cottone. I am the grand daughter of Antonino "Tony" Cottone and Anna Ferrara Cottone. I have recently found information from an Immigration Record which has lead me to this site. My grandmother's parents were both born in Sambuca. My great grandmother's name is listed as Marie "Mary" Donna - I believe that "Donna" must have been shortened but have no leads as to the "real" surname. She was born on August 7, 1886. My great grand father, Antonino Ferrara was born on October 23, 1878. The records indicate that both left Italy from Palermo on October 23, 1900 on the SS Sempione and landed in New Orleans. They were married on April 4, 1904 in Donaldsville, La. Soon after the birth of their first child Anthony in January of 1906 they moved to Champaign/Urbana Illinois where my grandmother Anna was born in 1908. A third child Daniel was born in 1909. By 1910 they were living in Bloomington, Illinois and eight additional children, Margaret, Wanda, Emma, Clara, Sam, Dominic, Andrew, and Theresa were born there between 1910 and 1929. I would very much like to know if anyone has any additional information regarding the parents of my great grandparents so that I might continue my search.

Feb 25, 2008 01:07 mjjf84@yahoo.com Hi, this is a very intersting website. I have ancestors who come from Sambuca. My great-great-great grandfather was named Giovanni Bongiorno (maybe spelled Buongiorno or similar) and he, family history says, was born in Sciacca, which is nearby. But at some point he came to Sambuca. He married a woman named Maria Rosa Cacioppo, who WAS born in Sambuca. Looking through this website, it appears that "Cacioppo" was an extremely common name in Sambuca. Giovanni also had a brother, Antonino, who had a son named Baldassare. Looking through the Sambuca birth records on this sight, an Antonino Bongiorno had a son Baldassare in 1880. I know Baldassare had descendents in Sambuca: two sons Antonino and Salvatore. Salvatore married Sarina Campisi and had two daughters, Rita and Maria. Salvatore Bongiorno was somehow prominent somewhere at some point Giovanni and Maria Rosa had numerous children. My great-great grandfather, Giuseppe "Joe" Bongiorno, was born in Sambuca on April 23, 1864. According to family history, he had siblings: Michael, Mary Frances, Lilly, Bessie, Frank and Maria Adenzia (most of those names were anglicized of course). I assume they were born in Sambuca as well, though I don't know. I know that Michael, Lilly, Frank, and Mary Frances settled the US, around New York and New Jersey. Bessie and Maria Adenzia may or may not have stayed in Sicily. Michael married Maria Sclavane (Sclavone?), Mary Frances married Ignatius Recca, Maria Adenzia married a Burbiglia (Birbiglia?), and Lilly married Charles Mule'. There seem to be a lot of Birbiglias and Mule's in Sambuca as well, though I don't know if this is a coincidence or not. I don't know the location, time or circumstances of these marriages. Lilly and Charles had at least one daughter, Rose, and their name at some point was anglicized to Muler or Muller. Michael and Maria also had a Rose and other daughters. Mary and Ignatius had Recca had sons John, James and Ben. Joe Bongiorno came to the US when he was 13 or 15 (for the first time; he moved back and forth a bit). He married Maria Bevilacqua on July 9, 1894 in New York City. She came over when she was 13 or 15 (I forget which was which). I don't know which siblings or parents came over with either of them. Maria Bevilacqua was born in Santa Margherita di Belice (even nearer to Sambuca than Sciacca) on Jan 28, 1874. Her parents were Giuseppe Bevilacqua and Crucifissa Santoro Bevilacqua. However, Giuseppe Bevilacqua had been adopted and his birth name was Giuseppe Bilello. I noticed quite a few Bilellos and even Giuseppe Bilellos in Sambuca as well. Joe and Mary moved back and forth between the US and Italy several times. Their daughter, Rose, was born in Sambuca on October 18, 1898. They were also in New Jersey for a awhile, in Carteret and Rahway, then when back to Italy in the 1910s with their children (don't know if it was to Sambuca or someplace else) and finally settled in the Bronx around Gun Hill Road and Paulding Avenue. That's about all I know. If anyone sees any connections don't hesitate to email me.

May 30, 2008 23:18 fireball_01@lycos.com Hi. I'm looking to find out everything I possibly can about my family. My grandparents both immigrated from Sambuca. My grandmother was Catherine Di Bella. She was born in Sambuca in 1905 and came to the US in 1910. Her parents came later. My great grandma was Frances and my great grandpa was Anthony. My grandfather was Albert Cacioppo. He was born in Sambuca in 1896 and immigrated with his brothers, Martin and Lawrence. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
