Once Precarious
Your ancestors didn't find everything they needed on the ground, did they? If you're honest with yourself, you'd have to agree with me here. No doubt, they had to climb vines, rocks, trees and anything vertical, to either find something good to eat or to escape a cave bear, sabertoothed tiger or some other ferocious predator. This trait is still a part of us, although greatly modified and not recognizable. Sure, we will climb a tree to avoid a rabid dog. But, most commonly, climbing the corporate ladder (moving upward to get better berries) is the leftover trait modified over tens of thousands of years. Likewise, your ancestor meeting a big guy at the top, munching away on the best of the berries, who decides to swing out and knock the newcomer back to the ground, is translated now into the "pink slip."
