Excerpt From My Novel "CONVERGENCE"The following excerpt (from my novel, yet unpublished) is included here to present some background as to how and why I came to consider the idea that the number "9" is, in addition to a symbol for the idea of change or transition, also a mathematical metaphor for the concept of "God". Chapter excerpt from CONVERGENCE: (scene: a train ride from Washington state to Montana)I watched in a nearly hypnotic state the changing scenery rushing past my window. Intuitively, I could feel something was in the works. A kind of shiver jerked my whole body as some deep and strangely nostalgic feeling welled up inside me. The scenery rushing past my window became a blur and in its place, like a fast-forward video image, I saw all the strange and unusual events of the previous twenty some odd years: the bookstore encounter where Edie and I met Tom; the Ouija board sessions; the Grek-5 communications; the first strange encounter with the Men In Black; Tom's move to Albuquerque and his chance meeting with old George Bessell; the phone call I received from the mysterious Mark Mitchell; the odd incident with the black helicopter and the phone line going dead during my conversation with Tom; the strange but compelling Dulce papers and that damned photograph of the alien/human hybrid; the enlightening but soulfully frightening jaunt through the Old Testament with twentieth century eyes and the discovery of extraterrestrial connections within those ancient writings; the voice telling me I would be a minister; Tom's incredible Grek-5 pyramid; the number nine... the number nine... Suddenly the fast-forward video came to a stop and I felt like I was just about to grasp something. It was as if, in my half conscious daze, someone had spoken to me and I didn't quite hear what was said. What the hell was it? I tried to think back. What was the last thing I was thinking about? The number nine. That was it. The meaning of nine had flashed through my brain in an instant and then it was gone. But was it really gone? The fading image of it was still there, if I could just grasp it and bring it into focus. I didn't want to let it get away this time. I tightened my concentration but instantly realized that was just putting up a wall. I took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, closing my eyes, trying to recapture the semiconscious state. The first thing that came into my mind was a conversation I heard on a radio program where someone was talking about the Whitley Strieber UFO/ET case. Strieber was the guy who wrote about his encounters in the book called Communion, the book with the cover picture of the alien with the huge, black, almond shaped eyes. Apparently, on a number of occasions just prior to what Strieber called a "visitation", he heard loud "knocks" on the walls of his house. Each time there were nine knocks which came in three sets of three; knock-knock-knock...knock-knock-knock...knock-knock-knock. Other people who reported having experienced alien visitations also reported hearing the same pattern of knocks. Strieber, this person said, had somehow come to the conclusion that the number nine was in some way significant and, to him at least, it meant a change was imminent. The next thing that came to mind was an article I had read about the mystical Chinese oracle called the I Ching which is also called the Book Of Changes. In the I Ching method of divining answers to questions, three coins are tossed three times. Three coins, three times. Three knocks, three times. The Book Of Changes. Imminent change. Was that it? Change? Yes. I grabbed it this time, by God. It made some kind of sense, somehow. I wasn't sure just how, but, intuitively it seemed right. It fit. The white owl, Carol said, could indicate change. Julie's white owl and my number nine. But how did "nine" signify change? I started thinking. Nine. Change. Transition. I reached up to the luggage rack and got a note pad and a pen out of my suitcase. I settled back into my seat by the window and wrote a column of numbers, 1 through 9. The first thing that struck me was that 9 was the end of the series. After 9 comes 10, but 10 is essentially 1 because the 1 plus the 0 equals 1. The next number is 11 which, in the same way equals 2 when the 1 is added to the 1. Twelve, then, equals three, 13 equals 4, and so on. I decided to write a column of numbers from 1 to 100. Starting with the 1, I circled every ninth number in the series. The circled numbers turned out to be 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, and 99. Each of these numbers, distilled to their single digit equaled 9. The number which immediately followed any one of these numbers equalled 1, when distilled to its single digit form. For example, the number following 18 is 19. Distilled, 19 equals 1 because 1 plus 9 is 10 and, then, the 1 plus the 0 is 1. The same with the number which follows 27. The same with the number which follows 36, and so on down the line. The number 9, then, could indeed be interpreted as a symbol of change, a sign of transition. Whatever follows nine becomes 1 again. As I sat there somewhat amazed at this new found revelation it occurred to me that, yes, it might be symbolic of change and transition but I had already seen that it was tied to other things as well. I thought back to my discovery that YHVH, the Hebrew four-letter name for God, also equaled 9 and that the seventh word on the Grek-5 list was God-9. I began to wonder how deep this actually went. I remembered that the ninth word on the list was LOVE. Quickly, I figured the numerological equivalent of the word "love". I was amazed, yet somehow not really surprised, to find the answer was 9. How neatly it all fit together. YHVH equals 9. "Love", the ninth word on the list, equals 9. God is Love, so says ancient wisdom, and so was verified by the Grek-5 beings with their alpha/numerical formula of God-9. Then I recalled something that just seemed to put the icing on the cake. Years ago I had seen a relatively obscure book called the Language Crystal. I remembered it as being a very strange book in which the author had discovered what he believed was some kind of a numerological code embedded within the English language and the key number was 18. Through painstaking research he was able to find that number encoded within literally hundreds of world, national, and historical events. The one thing I recalled vividly was his discovery of that number embedded within a word which now struck me as incredibly relevant. The word was "enlightenment". He highlighted the hidden word "eighteen" by using capital letters: E-nl-IGHTE-nm-EN-t. It was only now, at this particularly enlightening moment, that I realized the distilled value of 18 is 9. I guess it shouldn't have come as any surprise that one could find God embedded in enlightenment. It was all very clever, I thought, but what was the bottom line here? How did it tie together? How could God and Change be related? After all, hadn't we always been taught that God was unchanging, the same then as now and forever more, amen? Maybe, I thought, the word "change" wasn't quite the right word. The connotation was wrong. "Transition" was more like it. In the endless series of numbers, 9 is always the transitional number, the point where one segment ends and the next begins. E-N-L-I-GHTE-N-M-E-NT isn't a thing , it's a process, a never ending spiral. Everytime you reach the transition point of 9 along the journey, you start all over again, but at the next higher level. Now, presumably, the idea would be the eventual attainment of Perfection, of Oneness with God. But if the process is a never-ending one, then what's the point? The point is this. The process is never ending because God is never ending. The process is God. In terms of the numbers, when you total all of the individual numbers 1 through 9 you get 45 which, when distilled, equals 9. In order to actually complete the circle, you must reconnect at 1. But that completion can never be made because the 1 you reach is not the same 1 from which you have just come. It is the beginning of the next level, the next series of 9. God is forever unfolding. God is transition. God is 9. © 1997, Gary Val Tenuta See RANDOM NOTES for a note about the numerological value of the word GOD and the sacred four letter Hebrew name for God, YHVH and how they fit into the numeric symbolism being developed here.
