 BLACK AFRICAN HAIR
what to do if you were lucky enough to be blessed with it

its just all that dominant introvert personality coming through
me with my over one year old traditional locks, generally always up in a ponytail

Yay -- my good buddy Star was gracious enough to let me take some snap shots of her 6 year old (?) Locks up close
The process OF starting
My Mentor, Loctician, Shani Ayodeji (and Stars sister
) founder of
"Home Grown Doos" Here in Toledo Ohio
started my locks in the beginning.( I was absolutely ELITED to find another mini community of Pro Natural Africans)

Although the texture of my hair is coarse, it wasnt quite coarse enough to start without a product. A special type of locking gel was used -- its not an actualy Gel.. its a setter lotion that has a water base. Theres no unnatural chemicals in it, and it is undetectable. (From Detroit) I cannot recall the name, but when I do, I will post it here.

My locks are free formed. I have no specific parts in my hair, and there are no perfect sections or any of that stuff..
I used the palm roll method to keep up with them in the beginning.
Every time I washed my hair in the beginning
1x per week, I retwisted my hair, and it eventually "set" in locking form, although it did unravel in some area's.

Shani's family all have locs and they are all beautiful. The texture is very fine and curly for some. ANYONE can lock. Patience is the key.
If one cannot wait the time for their hair to lock, they arent mentally ready for the challenge. (or the comments and discouragement you will get on the way) -- even from family :-\

My hair took three months to "set"

Locked Hair
Welcome to my Locking Page. I am part of the following Yahoo Egroups Regarding Natural Hair:
LadyLocs
NappyLadies
RASTAWOMANNATION
My name is Chanay (better known as Cha)
me email address is creepybird@aol.com
Im from the Toledo Area, and I can recommend a Loctician, braider to all of those living in this area.
My Age: 17 years
Why I decided to Lock: I was tired of trying to fulfil the "Standard". The standard is ugly.  That was not how I was meant to look and I was not born with straight/limp hair.  I found it quite sad, that over all this time - even being born in the mid 1980's after the Black Power movement, -- that natural coarse Black Hair is considered Unacceptable by majority.
Black hair is beautiful. As a child, my parents had this brain washed mind set, and of course, my hair was pemanently straightened w/out me knowing anything better.
Hair Texture and Type: Coarse
medium/Thick hair over all
Starting off Length: 3-4 inches of natural hair
First Locked Sista discovered: Marian Hayden, a bass player of the Detroit Jazz Group - "Straight Ahead". When she had her locks she was absolutely stunning.
Before Natural: Bad Relaxer from the age of 8 or 9(due to mother),  Braids for many years on and off before deciding to return to the Natural
The first Big Chop - Half of my hair natural, the other half Relaxed.
Attempted - Two strand twists. FAILED MISERABLY due to the other half being straight.
GO AHEAD AND CHOP IT OFF, THERE IS NO SENSE TO ALL THE LADIES DOING THE HALF N' HALF THING
IN THE MEANTIME IN TRANSITION
Afro
Two strand twist up-do
curly roller sets (worked nicely during the beginning stages)
Method of Locking: Coil
-- Second Chop -- the rest of unnatural hair (yay!)
October 28th, 2001 I got my hair coiled (One stranded twists).
OR 8 months afterward I regularly wore a head wrap. During school (which caused quite a disturbance, or course) and around anyone i was not familiar with to protect myself from absorbing any negative energies..

Now...
I wash my hair 2-3x per week
wear wraps if im in a poor enviroment.. (be in the vibes, or the dust)
Only after washing do I apply 2-3 teaspoons of 7blend oil.
DONT USE ANY PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCTS!!!

Grease
Beeswax
"Dax" -- haha
Blue Magic
Carrot oil
and any of those other SPAM products are junk

avoid using SHEA BUTTER on your locks.. although its a good product
its for your nails, skin and cooking. I compare its quality to that of LARD
These products clog hair folicles, cause build up and most of all, waste your money.
Although many people of African Decent cannot produce the oils their hair need alone, dont over do it.

-- olive oil
rosemary oil
seseme seed oil
tea tree oil
sunflower oil
-- basically all these products which are good, are in the 7blend oils.

Shampoo's:
SUAVE shampoo smells great and its only 99cents.
Avoid any "DETANGLING" shampoo
AVOID any Oil removing shampoos
Creme of Nature is good also
anything is good, as long as it does not strip moisture.

-- Once set, or locked.. palm roll  in one direction while hair is wet, using the oil above if needed.
Dont over twist..
Dont twist at EVERY wash either. Max. for twisting is once a week.
