Materials: Scraps of worsted weight acrylic yarn in brown and other fall flower colors, crochet hook size F (3.75 mm) or size needed to achieve gauge, small amount of fiberfill, grapevine wreath (any size), hot glue or wreath wire, wreath bow, if desired. Gauge: Rounds 1-2 of the sunflower center= about 2 1/2" in diameter
Sunflowers (make 3) Center (make 2 centers for each sunflower) With brown yarn, ch 4; join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, work 11 more dc in the ring; join with a sl st in the top of the beginning ch 3. (12 dc) Round 2: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in the same st as joining, work 2 dc in each remaining dc around; join with a sl st in the top of the beginning ch 3. (24 dc) Fasten off. Lay one center on the other. Attach brown yarn with a sc in any dc through both centers, sc through both centers of the next 15 dc, stuff with fiberfill, sc through both centers of the next 8 dc; join with a sl st in the first sc. (24 sc) Fasten off. Round 3: Attach petal color (gold, orange, rust, dk red, maroon) with a sl st in any sc, ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, sc in the next ch, (sl st in the next sc on the center, ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, sc in the next ch) 23 times; join with a sl st in the first sl st. (24 petals) Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Chrysanthemums (make 3) To work sc dec over 2 sts: Insert hook in first indicated st and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop; yo and pull through all 3 remaining loops on hook. With chrysanthemum color (yellow, gold, off white, rust, dark purple), ch 4; join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc in the ring; do not join rounds. Instead, use a stitch marker to mark the first st of each round. (6 sc) Round 2: Work 2 sc in the back loop only of each sc around. Round 3: (Sc in the back loop only of the next sc, 2 sc in the back loop only of the next sc) 6 times. (18 sc) Round 4: (Sc in the back loop only of each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the back loop only of the next sc) 6 times; ch 1, turn. (24 sc) Round 5 (petals): Working in the back loop only, (sc, ch 3, sc) in each of the next 23 sc; continuing around on the unworked loops of round 3, then round 2, then round 1 and coiling toward the center of the flower, work (sc, ch 3, sc) 36 times. Fasten off. Back: Turn piece to the back. Attach yarn with a sl st to the first unworked loop on round 4, ch 1, (sc dec over the next 2 sts) 12 times; stuff piece lightly with fiberfill; (sc dec over the next 2 sts) 9 times to close the back; fasten off, leaving an 8" yarn tail for sewing. Sew back closed.
Asters (make 3) Center back With yellow, ch 4; join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Round 1: Work 6 sc in the ring; join with a sl st in the first sc. (6 sc) Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as joining, work 2 sc in each remaining sc around; join with a sl st in the first sc. (12 sc) Fasten off.
Center front With yellow, ch 4; join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Rounds 1-2: Work the same as rounds 1-2 of the center back; do notr fasten off after round 2. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining and in each remaining sc around; join with a sl st in the first sc. (12 sc) Fasten off.
Petals Round 1: Place center front over center back. Join petal color (yellow, dark pink, purple, off white, light red) with a sc through both layers of any sc on the center; continuing to work through both layers, (2 sc in the next sc, sc in the next sc) 4 times; stuff center lightly with fiberfill; continue to close the center by working (2 sc in the next sc, sc in the next sc) 4 more times, 2 sc in the last sc; join with a sl st in the back loop only of the first sc. (18 sc) Round 2: (Ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of the next 4 chs, sl st in the back loop only of the next sc on the center) 17 times, ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of the next 4 chs, join with a sl st in the unworked front loop on the first sc on round 1. (18 "petals") Round 3: (Ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of the next 4 chs, sl st in the next unworked front loop of the next sc on the center) 17 times, ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each of the next 4 chs, join with a sl st in the first sl st. (18 more "petals") Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Leaves (make 8-12) With green, ch 10 Round 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next ch, dc in each of the next 2 chs, (2 trc in the next ch) 2 times, 2 dc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, sc in the last ch, ch 1; working along the other side in the base of the foundation chs, sc in the first ch, hdc in the next ch, 2 dc in the next ch, (2 trc in the next ch) 2 times, dc in each of the next 2 chs, hdc in the next ch, sc in the next ch, ch 1; join with a sl st in the first ch. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Finishing Arrange flowers and leaves on wreath. Attach with hot glue or wire. Attach a bow, if desired.
