About the mission in Haiti
The Children of Hope Foundation sponsors the Children of Hope Mission and Centre Croix Desprez in Port au Prince, Haiti. Founded in 1987 by John Roberge, lay missionary, the Foundation has has built an orphanage for 16 children and grade school for 55 children, a community center for sponsorship children and their families, an HIV/AIDS education program; medical assistance program for poor Haitian children, and a canteen feeding program in the North of Haiti. After encountering a group of homeless and abandoned youth in front of the Cathredal, John arranged to have the children fed at an outdoor kitchen set up to feed workmen. Soon he realized that the many needs of these homeless youth could not be met on the street. In a step of faith and with only $2,000 in the church safe, he decided to open the St. Francis Xavier Home for Boys to six homeless and abandoned boys. With the support of family, friends, and various inter-denominational churches the orphanage began to receive the necessary funding to continue the work. Within a few weeks, the orphanage became home to 16 boys. During the next ten years John worked with the Haitian staff to make the orphanage an independent Haitian mission. In 1997, having enough funds to continue the work, the Director, Vital Anous, took charge of the orphanage and operated the home until 2003. The home closed after 16 years of service to children.
Altough no longer responsible for the orphanage, the Children of Hope Foundation continues its work in the various endeavors described above. One young man, Philistin Pierre, who resided at the orphanage for four years and worked for us for two years is now attending Bethany College of Missions in Minneapolis Minnesota. Wilson Solivert and Lucmane Niclasse both of whom grew up in the mission now coordinate our efforts in Haiti.
