Cascade Range Kennel is located in "The Rose City", Portland, Oregon at the foot of the majestic Cascade Mountain Range. We can see five local mountains including Mt. St. Helen's,The Pacific Northwest's famous volcano. Our climate is very mild and although we get some rain during the winter-time, it is a beautiful setting for raising my Rat Terriers. They have large play and hunting areas outside and, of course, the run of the house.

A little of my history with Ratties
Although I have been interested in this fascinating breed for years, Cascade Range Kennels is a new entry into the Rat Terrier world. I met my first Rattie as a paperboy in Groveport, Ohio when I was ten years old. One of my customers had a marvelous little white dog with a black patch around one eye and several small black patches on his back and short tail. He was only about 15 - 20 pounds (I am calling on my ten year old self for this memory, so he may have been anywhere in this range, but he was a small dog.) With the owners permission, I began spending five to ten minutes a day playing with and training him. He was so intelligent and willing to learn that I didn't even realize at first that they were training sessions. I just knew we were both having a great time!
Several years ago (and about 40 years after my amazing introduction to Rat Terriers) I came across a pair of miniature Rat Terriers while visiting a friend. One was a Chocolate Tri and the other was a mirror image of my childhood friend. Black and white bi-color, but his patch was over the opposite eye. I was once again in love and since I was searching for a companion pet, I began looking at Rat Terriers on the Internet, close to home, while away on trips - everywhere I went, I talked to Rattie breeders and looked at examples of my favorite breed of dog. What I found was that there are many different types of Rat Terrier and many different ideas of what is an "ideal" type of American Rat Terrier, from Tiny Tots to Decker Giants, Piebalds to Tuxedos, pure whites that are born with spots of color (and speaking of color - among others, chocolate, blue, lemon and apricot.) With my head spinning, I began my research. I spent over two years looking for information that I could use to make my decision. I found out that the type of Rattie I was looking for was called Type A. I found the UKC, UKCI, NRTA and ARTA and found that there was a standard for Rat Terriers. I also found several Ratties that I thought were excellent examples of the standard. I was intrigued and fascinated by the possibility that I could do my part to improve the breed and introduce others to the wonderful world of Rat Terriers. So I began my plans for a breeding kennel and began searching for high quality dogs for my breeding program.
