GREEN LINE (Lake-Englewood/Jackson Park)

Route is completely elevated, including through the Loop. 1993 marked the return of South Side elevated trains to the Loop, after spending a half century using the State Street Subway. And from 1994 to 1996, the line was shut down for two years to allow for extensive renovation of the 100 year old line. The Lake Street segment includes a portion sharing an embankment with the Union Pacific Geneva Subdivision, which in 1962 replaced a ground level CTA line. West of the Ashland Ave. station on the Lake Street segment is the junction with the Pink Line, which uses an elevated segment which had not been used by revenue trains from 1958 to 2006. The Jackson Park Branch operates directly above 63rd Street and once reached Stony Island Ave. But in 1982 the bridge over the Illinois Central Railroad was found to be unsafe, so service was cut back to University Ave. When the line was originally shut down for renovation, the CTA had anticipated restoring service as far east as Dorchester Ave. But service was restored only to Cottage Grove Ave., while the fate of the segment between there and Dorchester Ave. remained undecided. That segment was finally demolished in 1997. On one hand, transit is an asset to an area by providing access. But on the other hand, the elevated structure made 63rd Street gloomy.
