RAPID TRANSIT MAPS

Maps shows Chicago's rapid transit routes and stations, past and present. Colors are the ones presently used to identify the lines. Dashed lines indicate routes no longer in operation.

Present and past stations are shown. Italics indicate closed stations. Stations were originally closely spaced on the elevated lines. But CTA took over the system in 1947. And within its first few years, CTA closed many of the closely spaced stations, and introduced "A" and "B" operation on most lines.

Stations closed by CTA in its early years are indicated in black. Other stations are labeled according to the "A" and "B" stopping patterns adopted by CTA. This "A" and "B" skip stop operation was phased out between 1993 and 1995. Prior to the adoption of the present color identification of the lines, "A" trains on most lines had red signs, and "B" trains had green signs. Those colors identify "A" and "B" stops on the map. Blue indicates all trains stopped. Also noted are the years when the stopping patterns changed at certain stops.

With the opening of the Dan Ryan Line in 1969, CTA adopted these colors for signs at the stations, including blue at "all stop" stations. And throughout the 1970's, signs at nearly all other stations were replaced with such signs. Most of those signs remain, although CTA plans to replace the signs again in the future.

All lines have 2 tracks, except for 4 tracks between Howard and Armitage.

"A" AND "B" OPERATION

"A" and "B" operation was introduced on the Lake Street route in 1948. And in 1949, "A" and "B" operation was extended to the Howard-Englewood/Jackson Park route, and to the Ravenswood route. And from 1951 to 1958, "A" and "B" operation existed on the individual Garfield Park and Douglas lines. In 1958, when the Congress line replaced the Garfield Park line, and the Congress/Douglas-Milwaukee route was formed, a few stops on the Milwaukee segment to Logan Square were designated "A" or "B". And "A" trains operated on the Congress line and "B" trains operated on the Douglas line.

The Orange (Midway) Line never had "A" and "B" operation.

Within the Loop, all trains made all stops. Harrison on the Red Line was a "B" stop between 1978 and 1993.

On most lines, "A" and "B" operation existed during the daytime, Weekdays and Saturdays. The Ravenswood (Brown) Line generally had such operation during weekday rush hours only. By 1984, Saturday "A" and "B" operation was eliminated, and by 1990, "A" and "B" operation was limited to weekday rush hours.

The 1993 realignment of the south side rapid transit lines meant the end of "A" and "B" operation for the Dan Ryan, Lake, and Englewood/Jackson Park lines. And such operation ended on the remaining lines (Howard, O'Hare, Ravenswood) in 1995.
