All buses built before 1947 were originally owned by the four companies making up the Chicago Surface Lines (Chicago Railways, Chicago City Railway, Calumet & South Chicago, Southern Street Railway). Buses built before 1944 originally had different numbers in groups according to the owning company, and were renumbered in 1944. Buses 1620-1624 were renumbered from 1400-1404 in 1952, avoiding duplication with numbers of buses acquired with the Chicago Motor Coach Co. at that time. All buses were gasoline powered except for buses 6301-6306 and 6501-6630, which were diesel powered. Nearly all of these buses were retired by the end of the 1950's, with the arrival of new propane buses from Flxible.
CSL WHITE MOTOR BUS (1944)![]() Between 1944 and 1948, the White Motor Co. supplied the Chicago Surface Lines with 297 gasoline powered buses. #3407 was retired from regular service in 1955, and is now preserved in its original paint scheme by the Illinois Railway Museum.
Some roster information is from the book "Chicago Surface Lines, an Illustrated History", by Alan R. Lind.
