CTA BUS GARAGES

CTA GARAGE DELIVERY ASSIGNMENTS

Garages originally receiving newly CTA delivered buses, since 1979.

CTA's most recent buses were originally delivered to the following garages. In every case, buses were generally delivered in numerical order, with groups of buses all delivered to one garage at a time. Garages are listed in the order receiving the buses. Also noted are general descriptions of subsequent bus reassignments.

From time to time, minor reassignments would take place. Usually, the reassigned buses would be at the end of a numbered group of buses at a garage, enabling preservation of continuous blocks of numbers of buses assigned at a garage.

7000-7019 (M.A.N.-1979-articulated) - North Park
All buses retired by 1994. Buses remained at North Park during entire time, although sometimes loaned to other garages.

7100-7224 (M.A.N.-1983-articulated) - North Park, Archer, 77th Street
In 1988 upon opening of 103rd Street, buses transferred from 77th St. to 103rd Street, primary for use on #6 Jeffery and #14 South Lake Shore express routes. In 1994, buses transferred temporarily from Archer to Chicago Avenue, and in 1996 to North Park and 103rd Street. Articulated buses no longer needed at Archer, due to opening of Midway Orange Line rapid transit line, and discontinuance of southwest side express buses. At Chicago Avenue, buses used on temporary #23 Washington Express route, operating during Lake Street Green Line rapid transit reconstruction project. After 2001 acquisition of 7300 series buses from Seattle, all remaining buses assigned to 103rd Street.

9800-9974/1600-1624 (Flyer-1983) - Beverly, North Avenue, Forest Glen
In 1986 upon closure of North Avenue, buses transferred to Forest Glen. In 1988 upon closure of Beverly, buses transferred to 77th Street. In 1991, buses transferred from Forest Glen to Limits. And after 1994, much further transferring, so that none of this series has remained at one garage during entire time. The last remaining buses were at Forest Glen in 2001.

4000-4361 (M.A.N.-1985) - Kedzie, 69th Street, North Park, 77th Street
In 1988 upon opening of 103rd Street, buses transferred from 77th St. to 103rd Street. In 1995 upon closure of 69th Street and opening of 74th Street, some buses traded to North Park for newer lift equipped 4400 series buses. In 2001, after retirement of remaining 9800 series buses, some buses reassigned to Forest Glen.

4400-4875 (TMC-1991) - North Park, Kedzie, 77th Street
Lowest numbered of this first order of lift equipped buses originally assigned to 77th Street, transferred to North Park as higher numbers arrived. In 1994, some buses temporarily traded from 77th Street to Forest Glen for some 5300 series air conditioned buses, enabling more equal distribution of air conditioned buses through system. In 1995, major redistributions of buses, including transfer of all buses from Kedzie, although Kedzie later received a few such buses again.

4900-4914 (TMC-1991-narrow) - Kedzie

In 1994, some buses temporarily traded from Forest Glen to 77th Street for some 4400 series non air conditioned buses, enabling more equal distribution of air conditioned buses through system. In 1994 upon closure of Lawndale and opening of Chicago Avenue, buses transferred from Lawndale to Chicago Avenue. In 2002, buses at Forest Glen traded to Kedzie for 6000 series buses.
