CONVERTED CARHOUSES/BUS ROUTE ASSIGNMENTS

(NORTH SIDE)

For each bus garage, bus routes are generally listed in the order in which they began operating at that garage. Unless noted, streetcar routes which these bus routes had replaced, had been based at the same garage/carhouse.

As buses became more widely used, not all carhouses were adapted for buses, requiring some routes to be transferred when various streetcar routes were converted to buses. Other carhouses were converted later into bus garages, resulting in further changes in route assignments. Longer routes generally had runs divided among more than one garage.

Various route changes were made over the years, with many changes involving routes being combined, or being split into separate routes, or a portion of one route becoming a portion of another route. Such changes as are generally not documented here if they did not significantly affect garage assignments. Not included are certain downtown shuttle routes, many of which would be divided among more than one garage, and operationally were usually extensions of various main line bus routes between downtown and different parts of Chicago.

Elston briefly housed two trolleybus routes.

The Kimball trolleybuses were actually stored at a shed at Kimball/Peterson, and its relatively isolated location was a reason it was soon converted to gasoline buses. For the North Elston route, trolleybus wires coexisted with the streetcar wires between the carhouse and beginning of the trolleybus route at Lawrence Ave.

Kedzie accommodated two trolleybus routes prior to accommdating motor buses. As Kedzie was later adapted to accommodate buses, three bus routes returned to Kedzie, after having temporarily being based at North Ave. after being converted from streetcars.

Kedzie was closed 9/2/79 to be completely replaced, reopening 6/29/84. At the time, Lawndale temporarily reopened, with most routes temporarily transferred there. Routes 16, 17, 20, 126, and 131 were temporarily transferred to North Ave.

From 9/7/86 when North Ave. closed, to 7/3/94 when Chicago Ave. opened, there was much temporarily shuffling of routes, with Lawndale temporarily reopened again. Most route assignments resumed upon opening of Chicago Ave., with a few exceptions. Routes transferred from Kedzie to Lawndale included 18, 21, 25, 37 (certain runs), 50 (certain runs), 60, 82 (certain runs). Routes transferred from North Ave. to Kedzie included 57, 65, 66, 70, 72, 73, 74.

Lawndale was temporarily reopened from 9/2/79 to 6/29/84, to allow for replacement of Kedzie. Routes assigned were 7, 12, 18, 21, 25, 37 (certain runs), 50 (certain runs), 52, 60, 82 (certain runs). Lawndale closed again 6/29/84, when Kedzie reopened.

Lawndale was temporarily reopened again from 9/7/86 to 7/3/94, after North Ave. closed and until Chicago Ave. opened. Routes assigned were 18, 21, 25, 37 (certain trips), 50 (certain trips), 53, 54, 60, 82 (certain trips). Routes 53 Pulaski and 54 Cicero had been at North Ave. The other routes were transferred from Kedzie, while Kedzie assumed many of the east-west routes from North Ave.

On 1/27/43, some routes were transferred to newly leased Lawrence Ave. Garage as part of wartime conservation efforts. Trolleybuses from route 78A and certain runs of route 85 temporarily were stored in a lot at Central/Avondale.

Routes 6, 7, and 20 from Kedzie temporarily were based at North Ave., when North Ave. was more ready to accommodate the buses which replaced the streetcars.

Route 70 included former streetcar route 68, and was formed by combining other former bus and streetcar routes into one bus route on Division.

On 6/19/55, 76 Diversey became a motor bus route, routed through with a former Chicago Motor Coach Co. route and based at the former CMC Keeler Garage.

From 9/2/79 until 6/29/84, while the replacement Kedzie Garage was being constructed, routes 16, 17, 20, 126, and 131 were temporarily transferred to North Ave.

On 9/7/86 upon closure of North Ave., Lawndale temporarily reopened until 7/3/94, when the replacement Chicago Ave. Garage opened. Most routes were transferred to Kedzie, with many routes being transferred from Kedzie to Lawndale. Routes transferred from North Ave. to Lawndale were 53 and 54. And routes transferred from North Ave. to Forest Glen were 76, 77, and 86. All routes were assigned to Chicago Ave. upon opening except 77 and 86, which remained at Forest Glen.
