CONVERTED CARHOUSES/BUS ROUTE ASSIGNMENTS

(SOUTH SIDE)

For each bus garage, bus routes are generally listed in the order in which they began operating at that garage. Unless noted, streetcar routes which these bus routes had replaced, had been based at the same garage/carhouse.

As buses became more widely used, not all carhouses were adapted for buses, requiring some routes to be transferred when various streetcar routes were converted to buses. Other carhouses were converted later into bus garages, resulting in further changes in route assignments. Longer routes generally had runs divided among more than one garage.

Various route changes were made over the years, with many changes involving routes being combined, or being split into separate routes, or a portion of one route becoming a portion of another route. Such changes as are generally not documented here if they did not significantly affect garage assignments. Not included are certain downtown shuttle routes, many of which would be divided among more than one garage, and operationally were usually extensions of various main line bus routes between downtown and different parts of Chicago.

The 39A route was combined with the 39 Pershing route on 2/15/48 into a single bus route based at Archer. Prior to then, route 39 was a streetcar based at Cottage Grove.

The 35th St. and 47th St. streetcar routes were temporarily transferred to Cottage Grove for their final years as streetcar routes, allowing Archer to become a bus only facility.

Routes 59 and 43 temporarily were based at Archer, when Archer was more ready to accommodate the buses which replaced the streetcars. Route 43 was based at the former Chicago Motor Coach Co. 52nd St. Garage. until 4/24/83, when 52nd St. closed and that route returned to Archer.

In addition, Archer housed the various express bus routes operating via Archer Ave. or the Stevenson Expressway, phased out after opening of CTA's Orange Line rapid transit to Midway Airport. Upon opening of the Orange Line, several new feeder bus routes based at Archer began connecting with the rapid transit at Midway Airport.

As 69th St. was later adapted to accommodate buses, four bus routes returned to 69th St., after having temporarily being based at Archer and 77th St. after being converted from streetcars.

Western route 49 remained a streetcar route until 6/17/56, temporarily transferred 9/5/54 to 77th St. to allow 69th St. to become strictly a bus garage. Upon conversion to buses, route returned to 69th St.

Route 55 was a former Chicago Motor Coach Co. route 6, transferred from the former CMC's 52nd St. Garage.

On 7/3/94 upon closure of Limits, 69th St. assumed all runs of routes 8 and 9 which had been based at Limits. 69th St. also assumed all runs of route 49 which had been based at North Park, which at the same time assumed many north side routes from Limits.

On 6/18/95 upon closure of 69th St., most routes transferred to the newly opened 74th St. Garage.
