Sitting now silent on the crest of Little Round Top, the guns of Lieutenant Charles Edward Hazlett's battery, 5th United States Battery D, nicknamed the West Point Battery, are amongst the many guardians that watch over the battlefield where blue and gray clashed for three hot, sanguinary days in July 1863 outside of the small town of Gettysburg, in south central Pennsylvania.

The 124 men and 6 ten pound parrot rifled guns of Hazlett were engaged in some of the hottest fighting of the battle on the afternoon of July 2d, when the fighting swirled around a little, partially bald eminence, named Little Round Top. In the fight, Lieutenant Hazlett was shot through the head and killed as he leaned over to capture the gasped words of his dying friend, Brig. Gen. Stephen H. Weed. Command of the battery passed to Lieutenant Rittenhouse.
