Churchill Academy was founded in 1996 in order to educate the many children in Montgomery, Alabama and the surrounding areas with special learning needs. These children have diagnoses that range from Attention Deficit Disordered, to Learning Disabled, to Gifted! They may experience difficulty insocial skills, comprehension, handwriting, reading, organization or other areas. Some are capable of working well above grade level in some academic areas. They vary iin their areas of strengths and weaknesses, but what they have in common is their need to learn differently. Many of these children have incredible gifts and areas of strength! They are, each of them, capable of becoming successful students if they are provided with a supportive environment and individualized academic programming which teaches to their strengths, addresses their weaknesses and encourages strategies for compensation.

LOW STUDENT-TEACHER RATIOS

Research shows that academic achievment increases as class size decreases. Moreover, individualized instruction matched to specific academic levels and tailor-made educational programs can only be provided when class sizes are small. Teacher to student ratios are limited to 10:1 and supplemented by trained volunteer assistants.

INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PROGRAMS

Prior to entry into the program each child is tested in order to determine specific academic levels and learning style. A Learner Profile is written for each student so that staff members are aware of, and can plan for, specific learning needs. An Individualized Learning Plan which identifies academic and remedial goals is designed and implemented for each child.

PROGRESS

Working as a team, the school administrator, teachers, parents and therapists regularly monitor the Individualized Learning Plan. Additional assessment is provided as needed, along with annual achievement testing.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

Classrooms at Churchill are designed to enhance self-esteem, encourage student-directed learning, and maximize achievement. Students are taught according to specific learning needs. Individualized academics are presented in centers, in small student groups. The focus of classroom management is positive, with reinforcement for appropriate behavior and logical consequences for inappropriate behavior.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL

Young Winston was a chunky lad with a mop of red hair. It is said that he: talked with a stutter and a lisp, did poorly in his schoolwork, was stubborn, high spirited and annoyed everyone.

If young Winston were around today, it is likely that he would receive a diagnosis of Speech Delayed, Dyslexic and/or Attention Deficit Disordered.

What happened to Young Winston? How did he evolve into one of the greatest statesmen in world history: the heroic prime minister of Great Britain? What finally allowed him to discover his great public speaking, writing, reporting and painting skills?

SUCCESS

Winston Churchill found success, and from success grew self-esteem, and from self-esteem great things!
Winston entered secondary school as the lowest boy in the lowest class. While his ranking did not change, his love for the English language began to grow. One of his instructors noticed that Winston spent hours playing with toy soldiers, and decided that soldiering was the only career for a boy of limited intelligence. Winston failed the Royal Military College entrance examination twice, but soon rose to the top of his class. He found his niche'. He found SUCCESS. He graduated eighth in a class of 150, and the rest is history!

Winston Churchill was not alone. Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and many other famous figures have overcome great odds in order to find success and self-worth.

THE CHURCHILL ACADEMY EXISTS FOR ALL THE WINSTONS, TOMMYS AND ALBERTS; THAT THEY MIGHT FIND SUCCESS AND SELF-WORTH.

Churchill Academy is a member of the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA), Children & Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders (Ch.A.D.D.), and the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, and is registered with the Alabama Department of Education.
