Nunya is slate in color ( he gets almost white in the winter months) during the summer he gets a nice tan and gets dark again. He has long furnishings on his head, neck, socks, and tail. He is know as a Hairy Hairless Crested. He reminds me of a Clydesdale Pony. The Cresteds are a very active and lovable dog which gives tons of kisses. Nunya could be laying in your lap sleeping than all of a sudden jump up and off running. Nunya is a Registered Therapy Dog with TDI he has just received the title of TDIAOV. He received his CGC title in May 2002.
Crested is the Powderpuff, which has a coat of long, straight , silky hair. The average maximum height is 13 inches. They hardly ever shed, and are hypoallergenic and are moderately protective. They love to run and play, this is where I suggest that you have a fenced in backyard.
Now for the grooming: They are not a dog for everyone, you have to be able to give them the grooming they require. First, they do get blackheads, and this means they need regular bathing. I start off with a Aloe Vera gel (follow the directions on the bottle), rinse, then I use Apricot Facial Scrub, That I apply wiith a Facial Buff using gentle pressure on the dog. Rinse, now use a good shampoo, rinse throughly. Now its time to brush the teeth, I use a dog toothpaste which you can purchase at your local pet store. If they get blackheads you can use Philsoderm, if this doesn't work check with your vet, he may have a better solution. Dry him with a warm dryer, not hot, check on your arm first. When he is still damp from the bath, use a good hand lotion, such as Aveeno, it will absorb better into the skin at this time.
There are two kinds of hairless, from having no body hair to being a very hairy hairless. Your Hairless variety will need clipping or shaving especially if your are to show in conformation. First you shave him with a Oster A-5 clipper with a #30 blade. or I use a Conair mustache trimmer, it is smaller, and not as loud, most of all Nunya seems to like it alot better. If you use a electric razor make sure you use shaving cream. DO NOT use anything with LANOLIN in it, some cresteds will have a allergic reaction to it. You start by clipping from the tail to the head, taking off the unwanted hair. Make sure you don't catch the mane and socks in your clipping. You can put the long furnishings in a ponytail to keep them out of the way so you don't accidently clip any off. DO NOT DIG into the pads of the feet but clear off any long hair. Now to get off any stubble you can apply shaving cream and use a Mach3 razor or hair remover. Nair, Neat , Magic are some of the hair removers . You can use Vet Wrap to protect the long furnishings of hair you want to keep. NEVER APPLY TO THE FACE OR GENTIALS. Apply to a little spot to test your Cresteds reaction he may have if any. Next, apply to your crested making sure you do not get on the socks, tail,or mane, leave on for around 5 minutes (times vary) DON'T LEAVE ON TOO LONG OR YOU WILL BURN THE SKIN and Always do a skin test first and when shaving be careful not to razor burn or nip him.
I like to clip the face, ears and neck on mine. I use a "Conair Mustache Trimmer because it is small and quiet. The area you shave on the neck should look like a U shape. I clip down the bridge of the nose and around the mouth (being careful not to nip the edges of the mouth) hold the mouth taunt and tight and closed. Don't forget to clip between the eyes. Clip the face from the outide corner of the eye to the ear then going down the neck to the throat. Next, If you want to trim the ears you clip down to the fold on the front and back. This is up to you both ways are ok, if you decide to leave the hair on make sure the ears can support the weight of the hair. Don't forget to clean under the tail for a cleaner look.
Next, You will want to brush your puff before you bath. Brush down to the skin making sure thaer are no mats or tangles in the hair. They go through a matting stage when they start cutting teeth and they start to lose their puppy hair and get their adult hair. It is important to brush them everyday at this time, this is called blowing out. You will have lots of hair that you comb out this is the puppy hair falling out. After they get through this stage you will only have to brush once a week. Now that you have made sure their are not mats it is time to bath your puff. At this time you can brush the teeth. Make sure you have a good shampoo AND conditioner. I use a lot of conditioner ( I use Pantene which I water down a little and put in a spray bottle so that it is easier to reach all the hair everywhere.
ALWAYS make sure you get out all the shampoo and conditioner (rinse several times). Now comb for any tangles. You can let dry naturally or towel dry. If you decide to blow dry, don't get too close or use too hot a dryer. Brush as you blow dry. If the hair starts to dry before you get it brushed just mist with water.
The ears should be done with every bath. You can remove the hair in the ears by using a ear powder to put into the ear for easier hair removal and gently pull the hair out with your fingers instead of a hemostat,( they may move suddenly and you may pinch the ear with the hemostat, I just think your fingers are safer and easier. Watch for any signs of discharge brown in color or a build up of wax, this may be caused by a ear infection.

I was just awarded the new title of TDIA therapy dog after only 3 months. I received a certificate and a nice pin. UPDATE: I have received my title of TDIAOV after 250 visits in less than a year. It has been a rewarding experience bringing so many smiles on so many faces. I hope to continue this for years to come....
