DJ'S ANVIL WORKS
Brazing a Bald Eagle Sculpture
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Years ago when I was in grade school, I helped my father who was a welder by trade and an inventor.  He taught me to use an oxyacetylene torch so that I could cut various shapes in different thicknesses of metal.  He also taught me the process of brazing, which at that time was about the only method of repairing cast iron.  Often, when he was occupied with other things, I would take some of the shapes and fuse them together to make interesting looking figures.  Many of them amazingly looked like an animal or some type of abstract figurine.  It was at this time that an interest was sparked to try my hand at sculpture.

It was years later between classes one semester that I took the time to revive the idea that I had many years earlier.  An art professor who taught at the same college where I taught saw my work and encouraged me to follow the dream.

Since that time my goal has been to create sculpture that appears realistic in nature and that implies motion.  I watch wildlife that my work calls for and try to place them in settings where their counterparts would be.  I use different types of metals to accent the true colors.  Different types of metals respond in different ways to the outside elements.  My subjects take form with heat, cutting, grinding, welding, brazing and pounding.  I try to make full use of the ruggedness of the metal that I use.  My goal is to make you turn your head and take that second and third look.  Hopefully you will be intrigued.
