Water in Hydraulic oil
There are four places that water can get in the hydraulic oil. The filler plug loose or the gasket bad. The boots on the shift levers gone or not sealing around the levers. The little breather on the lift cover without the top piece. A bad master control spring boot bad or missing. I always kept good boots on mine. But I would also turn a five gallon bucket over the shift levers, I had a plastic 1gallon ice cream pale that I slid over the master control spring or some times I would just wrap a trash bag around it. If I had a implement on that I did not want to unhook. Thanks to (Jack in New Brunswick) for reminding me I did not have this on here
Converting the TO35, MF35 & 135 from manual to power steering
To convert one of these to power steering you first have to change the transmission top to one with the power steering gear cast in it. The gears & shaft are different in these unit also. you need the pump that mounts on the engine the pumps are different for the Diesel & Gas. You will have to have all the lines. These parts from Massey if you can even get them today would probably cost $3000.00. I have no idea what a salvage charges for them today 10 or 12 years ago they cost about a $1000.00 to $1500.00 from a salvage.
Cartridge To Spin On Filter Adapters
You can get a spin on filter adapter to replace the cartridge type on the Perkins engines both Gas & Diesel there are a number of place here on the web that sell them. If the cartridge type dose not have the spring & washer in the can below the cartridge your filter is not doing any filtering. About half of the ones I have seen did not have the spring & washer in them
Loose PTO Handle
The PTO handle has a spring or roll pin which ever you want to call it. That holds the handle on the shift fork shaft. These pins will wear to the point where they will let the shift fork slide in enough the spring & detent will not keep the PTO in gear. You see a lot with nails through them. Running them loose will wear the hole to the point where you can not keep the pin in them. If you have one with a lot slack in it it is best to change out that pin before it wears to much to hold a pin
Stuck Heads
The Perkins engines head gasket will sometimes leak between the center head bolts & the cylinder. Causing carbon to build up around the studs to the point that you can raise the front wheel off the ground by lifting on the head. Especially on 3-152 & the 4-203 engines. The other engines will do this to but not near so bad. I always used a cherrypicker or a hoist i would put a little strain on them & used a 2X4 against the side of the head & hit it a few times to shake it loose. I have spent as much as 2 hours getting a head off of one of these engines. I have never had to this but I have heard of cases where the studs had to be drilled out to get the head off.
Hard Shifting Of The Three Speed Lever On Multi-Powers
The tractors with Multi-Power transmissions are very hard to shift the three speed lever out of gear when the Multi-Power is in the high range. This is because the spring-loaded ratchet keeps pressure on the gears when it is in the high range. On some the only way to get them out of gear is to put the Multi-Power in the low range. Or kill the engine will do the same.
Marvel-Schebler Carburetor adjustme
This is the way I always adjusted them in the field. A lot of people do not agree with me on how to do this but it always worked for me. I stared with both screws about a round & a half out. At about half throttle screw the power jet screw out till you start to get black smoke out the exhaust. Then turn it in slowly till the smoke stops. Adjust the small idling screw either in or out as needed to make the engine idle smooth. If I was at the shop I always put them on the Dyno to make these adjustment under a load.
100 Series Dash Lights
The 100 series tractors had neon dash light if a bulb burned out you had to replace the whole gauge they were a little expensive so most got replaced with a gauge that used a regular bulb in them or no bulb at all. There is a transformer under the dash for the original dash lights I have had a lot of people ask me what that little black box is for
Remote or Auiliary Hydraulic pump
Remote hydraulic and Multi-Power pump is a two-stage pump. It has two sets of gears the front part is for the Multi-Power and Independent PTO the back part is the remote hydraulics. It is not uncommon for the remote part of the pump to go bad and the Multi-Power to still work. To replace this pump the lift cover has to come off and the tractor has to be split between the rear housing and the transmission. If you have just Multi-Power or Independent PTO or you have just the remotes this pump is a single stage pump most of the time but not always
Carburetor to governor Linkage Adjustment On Continental Engines
With the throttle pull down in the wide-open position Disconnect the Rod from governor arm that runs to the carburetor. Adjust to where the pin hole in the clevis is a half a hole past the hole on the governor arm when pulled all the way forward and the throttle is in the wide open position. This is done with the engine shut off.. This is the most common thing I have found when the balls or flyweights are all intact. You can check to see if the governor is working by disconnecting this rod with the throttle pull to wide open move the rod forward slowly at that time the governor arm should move toward the rear. Be careful not to let the engine rev to high when you are doing this. It is best to have someone handy to shut off the switch while you do this just in case the rod gets away from you. The Perkins engines is different I would have to look at the manual on it.
Massey Ferguson Industrial Line
I am asked a lot about the Massey Ferguson industrial tractors there was several different ones of these through the years. I think I have worked on at least one of every one of them there was a MF202, 203,204,205 the 300 series I can’t remember how many there was of them I know 302 303 & 304 And I think a 305. There was also a 35 utility these were all built in the late 50s & early 60s. Next there was the MF2135 it was replaced with the MF20 there was a MF30,40 50 & 50A there were some large one the MF70 & MF80 these were built in the late 60s & early 70s starting in 1974 there was the MF20C.30B 40B & 50C in the late 70 there was the MF60 there was some crawler the ones I remember 2244,200,200b also some 300 400 & 500 Massey Ferguson quit building the industrial line in about 1982 most of these could be order with Loaders & backhoes on them. I can help on most of these it has been so long that I have forgot some of it.
Three point & PTO On Instant Reverse
The Instant Reverse Transmission or sometimes called a hydraulic shuttle that are found in a lot of the Industrial tractors. The PTO & the hydraulic pump will only turn when one of the pedals is pushed down. In order to raise the three point you either have to be moving or have the shifter in neutral with one of the pedals pushed down. Most of these did not come with PTO on them.
Operating backhoes with manual shuttle
When operating a backhoe with a tractor that has the manual shuttle transmission you need to put the main shift lever in neutral and the shuttle shift lever in reverse that is the only way the center bearing can get the proper lubrication.
