WHERE WE STARTED
I can't remember a time, when I was growing up, that my family didn't have at least one German Shepherd dog. They were our playmates and our protectors. We also had other breeds from time to time, as well as mixed breeds; but our beautiful GSD were what we were known for in our neighborhood. When I grew up and left home, I was not able to have dogs for a while. I got married and my husband said he would buy me a dog. There was no question what breed I wanted. I got my first GSD in 1986, from a local breeder. I can honestly say that she was exactly what I asked for....big, dark, and good tempered. Knowing what I know now, I can also say she left a lot to be desired according to the standard for the breed. She also developed hip dysplasia. She was spayed, and I bought my first show dog from a breeder recommended by the local GSD club.
I have been seriously studying and breeding GSD since 1988. I have belonged to local breed clubs and the GSDCA. At the present time I belong to an all breed obedience club. I have heard all the arguments: German imports vs American bred GSD; Specialty dogs vs All Breed dogs; Performance/working dogs vs Show dogs. I got very disillusioned because of the back-biting, and self promotion by people who claimed to love the breed. Even though I do show my dogs when I can, I have found the price (in more ways than one) of "playing the game" is more than I want to pay. I've gone back to what caused me to love the breed from the beginning, and have included my family in everything I do with the dogs.
OUR GOALS
Well, as far as I know, there is only one standard recognized by AKC and the GSDCA; and, even though Germany uses another standard, it is very similar (according to the people trying to push the GSDCA to adopt it). I have come to the opinion that as long as I study and breed for dogs that meet ALL the standard requirements as closely as possible, I will continue to produce the beautiful, loving, and loyal animals that make this breed one of the most popular dogs in this country for families like yours and mine. That is the goal of Daystar German Shepherds.
