ARTOO'S DUNES
Just south of Stovepipe Wells, (one of two "barely" populated towns in Death Valley) are the sand dunes used for the filming of R2-D2 parting ways with C-3PO. Although the sand dunes shift constantly, the Grapevine Mountains in the background establish the location. It was important then to get a clear shot of the mountains to differentiate these sand dunes from any other. Low clouds and hazy sunshine made this difficult, but I was able to snap off this picture just moments before the weather took a turn for the worse and we were hit with a sandstorm. Just hours later we would find ourselves pelted with snow and hail.
