CRESCENT CITY RADIO CONTROL CLUB
March 30, 2006
Carl Cantrelle called meeting to order at 8:12 P.M.  Minutes of the March. board meeting were approved as read.  The treasurer report was approved as read.
Total Membership: 58  Attendance: 18  Quorum: 13    Guest: 3
Old Business
Fuel storage was discussed as Dickey Bruce doesn’t have the facilities to receive it or store it.  Steve Mintz and Carl Cantrelle are working on a deal with Hobby Hut to store some and Carl to store some.  This would make the fuel easy to get on either side of the creek.  This issue should be resolved by next meeting and special orders can still be handled as requested before the order is placed.
New Business
Please welcome George Ware into the club as he was voted in.
The safety subject, cell phones was discussed.  The outcome was no cell phones are to be used at the field due to interference with the frequencies used to fly the planes.  All guests are required to follow all the rules or they are not welcome to fly at the site and the member who invited the guest has to be present when his guest uses the field.
Before any outside guest or potential member can fly they have to come to a meeting to receive a temporary pass to display on their windshield so the owners of the property can readily see they belong out there.  No pass, no flying.
Carl Cantrelle started signing up workers for the fun fly.  Anyone who can give him some time needs to check in with him, this is what keeps our dues down.
Plane of the month was won by Ray Miller with his Fun Arrow one half scale.  Steve Mintz showed a new Raptor 30 Helicopter and explained the new technology involved in this helicopter, good job Steve and Ray.
Motion to adjourn was made by Ray Miller and seconded by Joe Ridolfo at 8:30 P.M.

Old Business
The price of the Fuel has to be obtained as to Hobby Hut being able to sell it for the price we want to sell it to the members.  It was discussed that whatever price we can get we will pass it on to our members as well as Hobby Hut.
The Fun fly was discussed as to more positions need to be filled before the event.  It seems like Jerry may be able to get the generator for our use again.  Steve to talk to Hobby Hut as far as what help Mike can give us for our raffle item.  Steve can get a radar gun from the duck squad but don’t know if it will work.  Carl mentioned that we could get one from St. Charles Parish and Steve could operate that one if his fails for the speed dash.
New Business
This year the 2006 U S Scale team will again be going to Sweden.  We will be selling tickets at the meeting to assist them.
Steve Mintz sent all our potential members and David Weber, the Forman at the field, a letter explaining the temporary passes that we will be using.  This means that you have to accompany your guest at the field.  The only ones allowed to be out there are the ones with passes or with a member with a pass
Mark Weitzman sent Steve a Letter and Some money in appreciation for using the field.  Steve Mintz will elaborate more at the meeting.
Mrs. Patricia Gosney donated two tables to the field along with a thank you letter, again Steve will explain.
We will have a small work party at the field on Tuesday the 25th to work on the Kitchen as well as the holes by the parking barricades.  We will also check out the field for Maintenance needed before the Fun Fly.  John Violet reported that the runway repairs that he and Bill Plelps are doing is coming around and which product is working the best, many thanks to both of them.
A motion to adjourn was made by Phil Page and seconded by Dickey Bruce at 8:50 PM

AT THE FIELD….
Everyone is reminded to use the Frequency board, Putting your AMA card in the slot above the PIN and attaching The PIN to your Transmitter. This reminder lets everyone know the PIN is in use and The Card Lets everyone know WHO has the pin. Fly Safely....
PLANE OF THE MONTH….
Don't forget to bring your airplane to the meeting. We will still be having the Plane of the Month award for the best plane there. It just might be yours.
FUEL….If you need fuel, contact Carl  985-783-6214, I'm sure he won't mind bringing some to the meeting for you.
BATTERIES ???
What’s up with the Li Poly batteries. They were the best thing since sliced bread a year ago, and now they  are the talk of the town. The bad side of town. It seems as though quite a few people have expreienced  problems with Li Poly and the charging and discharging problems associated with them. You can’t charge them to quickly, you have to be careful not to overcharge them, and you can’t discharge them below 3volts. Any one of these procedures if not followed properly can cause FIRE or EXPLOSIONS. Fortunantly there is a wealth of information on their proper use on the internet and in safety columes in virtully every magazine. Never use any charger that is not specifically designed for Li Poly, and make sure you are charging at the proper rate. Most newer battery packs have the ability to monitor the charge through a separate device to balance the charge of each cell in the battery pack. This helps prevent the over charge of an individual cell while other cells in the pack are still in need of charging. It all takes time.  While most electric flyers have sometimes pushed a Ni Cad pack to charge the pack more quickly. This procedure could spell disaster for a Li Poly pack. The Li Poly batteries do not tolerate abuse, like the older Ni Cad’s. You are also guarding a larger investment in the Li Poly’s. These packs cost quite a bit more than other Ni Cad’s or Ni Mhi batteries. I’ve been flying electrics mostly now and using Ni Mhi because I ruined the two Li Poly packs I bought, by discharging them below 3v. When I put them in my plane the lighter weight made the airplane perform much better. But, I didn’t remember that the 3volt limit could be a death knell for the pack. Only when I attemped to recharge the pack did I notice the swelling of the pack. Hmm….. What could cause this. Oh well, at least the whole thing didn’t catch fire. I just ordered a Thunder Power Charger, along with the Thunder Power Balancer, and hopefully I won’t have any more problems. I’ll let you know how the new set up works out. See Ya.  Dickey Bruce
