HEARTS for the Lord Homeschool Group

About HEARTS

HEARTS--Home Educators' Association for Responsible Teens and their Siblings.

HEARTS is a Christian group formed to address the needs specific to homeschooled teens and to link together with other families who share their belief in a Biblically based education. HEARTS sponsors social activities, sports, and classes. They also produce a yearbook to capture the memories for the group.

They try to plan at least one social activity each month. Examples are Game Night, Video Scavenger Hunt, Progressive Dinner, Ultrazone, Ice Skating, Bowling, Paint Ball, and Homecoming.

HEARTS has also formed basketball and soccer teams for both Junior and Senior High, which have competed in the homeschool tournaments for the last three years.

The classes now offered vary from year to year, depending upon what is needed and teachers available to teach. Those who join are asked to sign a code of conduct and the following Statement of Faith:

We believe:
The Bible is the living, inspired, and infallible Word of God. It is without error in whole or in part in its original language and constitutes God the Father's completed and final revelation.

In one God, eternally existing in three persons-God the Father, God the Son (who is the Lord Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit- each of whom is equal in being, power, and glory.

In the Lord Jesus Christ, God's only Son, His virgin birth, sinless life, sacrificial death for our sins, His bodily resurrection, and His personal literal return.

That man is saved by grace through faith and nothing of man enters into his salvation; it is a free gift. Man's efforts, regardless of how good or well intended, before or after salvation, have no bearing on one's salvation. Salvation is only by the finished work of Christ.

The Classes and Teachers

At Christian Fellowship Church (CFC) in Ashburn:

Art will be taught by Karen Kovechi. See last two pages for a description of the various workshops.

Composition I, Word Study, Intro to Latin, and Grammar will be taught by Rita Suder. The classes at CFC are based on six-week sessions, while those at Tara Learning Center (TLC) are based on eight-week sessions. However, Mrs. Suder is giving students who take Word Study or Intro to Latin at CFC the option of completing the last two weeks at TLC. The tuition is $10 per class, so it is $60 per session at CFC and $80 per session at Tara. If you choose to continue the last two classes at Tara, the tuition will be $80 per session. Please indicate on the registration form which one you are signing up for. Also, Mrs. Suder will be out of town, Monday, Sept. 9. Comp I and Word Study students can attend a make-up class at Tara, Friday, Sept. 13.
Composition I, which is geared for either junior or senior high students, includes writing and its many elements, mechanical and creative. Initial emphasis is on mechanics: form, grammar, and spelling. Grammar is taught as needed. Creativity, the interest factor, is integral from the beginning, increasing in significance as mechanical issues are resolved. Assignments include basic essay forms, book report, creative writing, newspaper forms, letters, poetry project, term paper, student novel, skits, etc. The subject of the book report is Dickens's Christmas Carol. The course stresses college-level formats. Special exercises deal with the importance of titles, openings, and conclusions. There are writing exercises during and out of class plus long-range projects. Spelling concentrations include 50 spelling problem words (anoint vs. annoint), ie/ei words, Latin expressions, and foreign language expressions. There is also a study of word roots using phobia lists (gatophobia, cymophobia, etc.) Materials fee is $10.
Word Study is being offered to 7th – 12th graders the first s
