Premise:
Voiceover on opening credits for first and second season, read by Richard Anderson

The grandson of Kwai Chang Caine walks out of the past.
"But I want to fight."
"Yes. So did your great-grandfather when he was your age."
He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple. An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other had perished. Fifteen years later they were reunited.
Now Caine faced new challenges.
And his son grew up.
"Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's what I do."
"I am Caine. I will help you."

In the third season opening credits, the line, "Look, I'm not my father ..." is deleted, replaced with "We're a team," along with some new footage.

One fan's perspective on the premise ...

After the destruction of the Shaolin Temple, young Peter Caine was eventually fostered by Captain Paul Blaisdell, and raised as his son. By the time Kwai Chang Caine discovered that his son still lived, Peter had become a police detective. Caine took up residence "somewhere in Chinatown," and with his friend Lo Si, known as "the Ancient," set about helping people in need. Peter and Caine slowly got to know each other again, facing enemies together, Caine often helping in sometimes precipitating Peter's more bizarre cases.
