Fighting for Openness, Honesty and Integrity in Adoption

Mission Statement:

The Adoptees Political Action Coalition was founded in 1993 as a grass-roots organization, our goal is to change the unfair and discriminatory adoption laws in the State of New York and to help other grass-root organizations throughout this country, do the same.

We consist of all members of the adoption triad who believe that the current laws regarding adoption are prejudicial and violate the rights of all those included in this triad.

We believe and have established legislation known as the "Bill of Adoptee Rights" that will allow adult adoptees (age 18 or older) the right to their own original uncertified birth
certificate.

We are fully aware that over 6 million adoptees in the United States known almost nothing about their birth parents because of state laws which seal all adoption records, New York is one of them. We fully understand the need for this to change.

We believe that adult triad members should have access to their own records and to records containing important information about them.

We accomplish our goals through political action, education and public outreach.

Foremost, we believe in openness, honesty and integrity in all aspects of the adoption process.

What we are working toward is no more than the same rights and privileges accorded to every other citizen of the United States--the right to preventive health care, the right to accurate religious, ethnic and social information, and the right to manage our own inter-personal relationships without government interference.

We do not support the Uniform Adoption Act (UAA) nor the use of Mutual consent registries.

"Free people are, of necessity, informed: uninformed people can never be free" (Senator Long, concerning the Freedom of Information)
