ORA HALE

Alike from the populous city and from the lonely glen, from the mansion of luxury, and from the hovel of poverty, death calls forth his victims to their appointed doom. No one may hope to escape. From the cradle to the grave the grim monster follows our foot steps with stealthy but steady stride.
On Monday August 23, he visited the home of Tom Hale and wife and took from them their loving little son, Ora.
He was born December 9, 1910 being four years eight months and fourteen days old. He was the picture of health, but that dreaded disease typhoid fever, overcame him after a period of two weeks illness.
Medical skill, nurses and indomitable fortitude could not stay the hand of death.
He leaves parents and one brother besides other relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
His remains were interred in the cemetery at Pleasant Hill after a brief but impressive ceremony conducted by Rev. W. G. Wigham.
Dear parents your loss is hard to sustain. But a light has been planted in heaven's window to guide you safely through, and the joy of again meeting dear Ora will drown all sorrow. So look to him who doeth all things well. Written by Guy Hale

THOMAS HALE

The subject of this sketch was born December 30th. 1887, and departed this life September 26, 1915; being at the time of his death 27 years, 9 months and 6 days old. The deceased was the oldest son of brother Alvin and sister Bell Hale. In March 1910 he was united in marriage to Miss Malissa Isham, who still survives him and to this union were born two sons, Ora and Alvin, the older preceding the father to the grave about one month.
Besides a loving wife and baby, the deceased leaves to mourn his departure, a father, a mother, two brothers, one sister and a host of other relatives and friends. Tommy professed faith in Christ a few years ago in the M. E. Church at Karbers Ridge, but the writer does not know whether or not he ever united with any earthly church organization. However, if his name was recorded in the "Lamb's Book of Life", the essential act was accomplished and all is well with his soul.
The deceased was a member of the IOOF Lodge at Karbers Ridge and was one of the most faithful members it had. His presence will be sadly missed in our assemblies and the fraternity loses a splendid exemplary type of brotherhood but like the sorrowing relatives and friends we must submit to the will of the Supreme Master and console ourselves with the fond hope of a heavenly reunion that will not be marred by death nor affliction, A Brother Odd Fellow, T.M.V.

ELIHU N. HALL

Elihu N. Hall, the eldest son of one of our old pioneer families was born on a farm in the northeastern part of the county September 8th 1870. He was married to the sweetheart of his boyhood, Ota Jane Brownfield, June 10th, 1894 and this long happy union of over 62 years was only ended by her death on November 21st. 1956. He became afflicted with that incurable malady, arthritis, the great crippler, some ten years ago and was an afflicted and bedridden patient until his Master, whom he had served so long and faithfully said it was enough and on October 23rd. 1957 the long ordeal ended and he became but a memory at the age of 86 years 10 months and 15 days.
He and his faithful companion were blessed with four children: William P. Hall, Mrs. Geneva Grater, Mrs. Golda Hess and Mrs. Galena Knight, all of the county and all of whom survive the parents.
He early displayed his reverence for the spiritual aide of life by becoming a minister of the Gospel at the age of 15 years, an activity which he was to maintain as long as his physical condition would permit. His consuming desire for knowledge was evident by his becoming a teacher in our common schools at the age of 18 years, the minimum age a license to teach could be granted. He continued his studies at Oakland City College, Oakland City, Ind. and received his degree from that institution in 1898, but continued postgraduate work for all of the years thereafter in other noted schools.
He always took an active and consuming interest in the civic, spiritual and educational welfare of the county, was owner and editor of the Hardin County Independent for several years, served the county as superintendent of schools for three-four year terms and was county judge for one term, in each which capacities, he was a popular and respected official. During this time, he was the author of a short history of the county which is both interesting and instructive and is still considered as an authority on many of the events of the early history of the county. After his physical infirmities limited his activities, he was the author of another volume "The Ballads of the Bluffs" depleting the life, activities and hardships of the pioneers of the county which he loved and in which his own immediate ancestors played a part. As was said of the patriarch of old: "He served his day and generation and was gathered unto his fathers and he would ask nothing more."

EDWARD HESS

Edward Hess died 1 July 1915, at his home near Cave-in-Rock after a continuous illness lasting four years. His funeral was conducted by Rev. Wigham at Cave-in-Rock Baptist church, on the day following his death, after which his remains were taken to Cave Hill Cemetery for burial.
He passed from life into death at the prime of manhood being at the time 46 years 2 months and 3 days. His fatal illness was brought on several years ago by his association with mines. At this time Mr. Hess was superintendent of the mines and on several occasions, he was compelled to go down into the mines from which he inhaled poisonous gases that in time caused his death.
Mr. Hess came to Hardin County in 1883 and located at Cave-in-Rock. In 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Frailey, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frailey, to whom he was a devoted companion until death called him. To this union was born two children, a son and a daughter who with their mother are left to mourn his departure.
Mr. Hess lived on the Baldwin farm for eleven years. When his health began to fail he gave up farming and moved to Fairfield, Ill., but as his health did not improve he came back to Hardin County and built him a model home on land given his wife by her parents.
Work was the great mainspring of his life. It was his chief inspiration. He was very concerned for his family's comfort. On this theory he accumulated enough for the sustenance of his family after he was taken from them.
Mr. Hess was a good citizen, a good neighbor, honest and trustworthy in all his dealings with fellowman. He told his family that he was ready and willing to meet death when the summons came. He left a message of hope in his inspiring face to those who were dear.
During his last sickness which was quite long siege, every wish of his was granted. His wife and children never tired of trying to alleviate some of his pain. The attention he received no doubt prolonged his life to a great extent. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved companion, children, brother, sisters and other friends and relatives.

MRS. FONT HINES

Mrs. Font Hines of this place, after a long and painful illness of months and even years, passed away Friday morning, and after funeral services at her home conducted by Rev. Weaver, all that was mortal of this aged grandmother, found a last resting place in the Odd Fellows Cemetery here. Our acquaintance with the deceased was only slight, and having heard her neighbors speak of her in loving kindness and respect, we take it for granted that she was a good wife and mother, and before she became afflicted labored long and hard for the support of her family. So for as we can learn, she had every care and attention possible in her long illness. Sympathy is extended to the aged husband and children.

BENARD HOBBS

Bernard "Hoover" Hobbs, the son of the late George and Flora Page Hobbs was born in Hardin County on July 24, 1917, and departed this life July 28, 1989, being 72 years and 4 days old at the time of his death.
He was married to Edna Austin on December 6, 1938, and to this union was born on son, Charles Roger.
Hoover graduated from Cave-in-Rock High School in 1936, and worked as a spar miner before moving to Detroit, Michigan, during the 1940's. He went to electrical school in Chicago in the early 1950's and was a graduate of Devry and Coyne Electrical Schools. The family moved back to Cave-in-Rock in 1958, whereupon he opened a radio and television repair shop. Eye cataracts forced him to give up his electrical work and he turned to the raising of livestock, eventually becoming one of the largest feeder pig producers in the area.
Hoover accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on March 21, 1969 and surrendered to the call of the ministry. He was ordained as a General Baptist minister in 1973 and pastored several churches in the Ohio Association. He continued to serve the Lord faithfully until his failing health forced him to give up his pastoral duties. He continued to serve as a trustee and faithful member of Mt. Zion General Baptist Church.

Hoover has said many times, "I know where I'm going, and I know who's coming after me."
Those we love must someday pass beyond our present sight
Must leave us and the world we know without their radiant light.
But we know that like a candle their lovely light will shine
To brighten up another place more perfect...more divine
And in the realm of Heaven where they shine so warm and bright,
Our loved ones live forevermore in God's eternal light.

ALTA MARIE HOLBROOK

Alta Marie the daughter of Mr. Bruce and Minnie Holbrook was born 13 May 1912, died 1 Jan. 1915, aged 2 year, 7 months and 18 days. Her sickness was of a short duration, Dr. Fowler was the attending physician. Indigestion was given as the cause of her death. All that medical skill could do was done to alleviate the suffering of little Marie, but to no avail. Her parents with kind friends and neighbors waited on and done all they could to keep her with them. So on the day above mentioned, the summons came and took little Marie from our fireside to realms of eternal bliss and glory. For Jesus said suffer the children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Little Marie was a kind and lovable disposition, made strong friends of all she come in contact with. Weep not dear parents for little Marie, she is not dead but is sleeping, while her spirit has took flight to God who gave it. You will not hear her sweet voice any more on earth, as she can't come back to you. Prepare yourselves to meet her, be as David was and go to her where there will be no more good byes.
On the day following her death, she was brought to Central Cemetery for interment and after funeral services, conducted by the writer, all that was mortal of little Marie was laid tenderly away to await the resurrection of the just. We have last a darling daughter. Written by Rev. Jonas Spivey From the Hardin Co. Independent 14 Jan 1915

GENEVA HUMM

Geneva, the two year old daughter of J.F. and Marzella Humm died suddenly last Wednesday. She was as well, only a few days before she died, as she ever was in her life, which makes her death more grieved. It was so sudden, so unexpected that it is yet hard to realize that she is not with us. While in a great time of sorrowing and grief as this, the attempt to console with mere words is futile, but we must do what we can to help carry the burden of worthy brother or sister and sorrowning relatives. In the words of the great McKinley: "It is God's will not ours be done." He saw that it was time to call the sweet child home; she had filled her mission, however short it was intended .
So with these few consoling remarks we conjure the sorrowing parents to a Savior ever ready and willing to bear your burdens. A cousin, Marie Humm

ARTHUR LEE IRBY

Arthur Lee Irby, the subject of this memorial sketch, son of James N. and Fanny Irby, was born near Rock Creek, Hardin County, Illinois, March 23rd. 1884, passed from this earthly scene by accident in Fairview Mines on the morning of February 14th. 1915 about 8:30 o'clock, age 30 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Deceased moved to Rosiclare, Illinois in 1909 from the state of Kentucky where he had spent several years of his life, during which time he won many friends.
On May 10, 1914 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Spivey of Rosiclare, his father Esq. James N. Irby officiating.
Besides his young wife he leaves a father, mother, two sisters, Mrs. Laura Stacey of Rosiclare, Illinois and Mrs. Hester Ladwig of Beloit, Wisconsin, two half sisters Miss Mary Irby, Mrs. Effie Leivers, all of Rosiclare, Illinois and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
The writer had known Lee from childhood and there was a daily beauty about his life that won the friendship of all who knew him. In temperament he was mild, conciliatory and candid, yet remarkable for as compromising firmness.
He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellowman, who lets into the dark places of his life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness is following in the footsteps of his Master. He was a young man of excellent heart, fine moral character and sturdy constitution and the stranger even a beggar never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands and was at the home by the bedside of the sick and delighted in all kinds of neighborly offices. He bore adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly.
It is a pleasure to remember him as he lived, it is with regret to say, he has passed away.
Funeral services and burial were delayed until Tuesday Feb. 16, 1915 in order that his sister, Mrs. Hester Ladwig and family might arrive from their far off home and be present and witness the last rites. However they failed to arrive in time for the funeral service, which were conducted from the home by Rev. Needham, but arrived a few hours later after which the body was conveyed a short distance to the Rosiclare IOOF Cemetery and just at sunset amid a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends all that was mortal of our beloved friend was lowered to it last resting place.
The writer begs to tender sincere sympathy to the wife, parents, sisters and other relatives of the deceased in their great bereavement. A friend

Olive was the light of her parents home, was a sweet and winsome child and was loved by all who knew her. God saw she was too delicate a flower to stand the rough words of the world, so He called her to come up and reign with the angels, where all is pure and lovely. We will say to the heart broken parents to try and resign their little darling to God. He knows what is best for us. He is too wise to make mistakes and too kind to be cruel. REV. DR. ALLEN LEDBETTER

A MINISTER AND SOLDIER ANSWERS HEAVEN'S ROLL CALL
In his home in Cereal Springs last Monday night, July 26th. 1926 Rev. Dr. Allen Ledbetter, a minister and soldier well known in Hardin Co. and Southern Illinois answered the solemn roll call of Heaven's mustering officer. The funeral and burial services were held Wednesday in Central Church and cemetery in this county.
The deceased was the son of Rev. Dr. Ledbetter, a pioneer minister of Hardin County. John T. Ledbetter, once sheriff and well known official of our county, Mrs. J. A. Oxford who departed this life 15 years ago, and Aunt Mary Thornton, now living in Elizabethtown, were members of this respected family.
D.A. Ledbetter was born in this county Jan. 12th. 1851 and at the time of his death was a few months more than 75 years old. He soon grew to manhood with a dignified stature and married young. His first wife was Mary, the daughter of Rev. Elihu Oxford, and a sister to the writer's mother. She lived but a short time. He next married a lady by the name of Morris who likewise died in a year or two but her son, Bunk Ledbetter lived to manhood. Later on he married Sarah J. Gullett, one of the daughters of the respected family of the late Uncle Pomp Gullett of this county. This union survived and became the parentage of a family of strong healthy children. Their names are Della, Ollie, Robert, Adrain, Emma, Roy and James W. Ledbetter, all of these, I believe, except Della lives and also Mrs. Ledbetter, their mother, to mourn the loss of one of the most devoted men to his family I ever knew.
Patriotism is a well marked trait of the Ledbetter family and with Rev. D.A. it was very pronounced; in many of his sermons and exhortations he showed warmth and feeling when he touched on the love of his country. When the tocsin, "Remember the Maine" was sounded over the country in 1898, Allen, as his friends familiarly called him., answered his country's call enlisting under Capt. Richard F. Taylor, in which company he remained til the close of the Spanish-American War. During this war his patriotism and his confidence in the fortifications and military strength of our country was well confirmed. He came back home saying that it is not outside faces that we need to fear, but sin corruption and rebellion against God. These threatening evils he made war on the remainder of his life, both in the pulpit and in private teaching.
About five years ago he sold his property in Elizabethtown and moved to Cereal Springs in order that Mrs. Ledbetter might be nearer her children and also that he might have a better outlet to his church work.
Failing health attacked him about two years ago, which later took on the proportions of Bright's Disease and despite medical aid and family attention brought his useful life to a close, however before the end came he arranged among other things that Rev. A. J. Clanton and Rev. R. J. Reed of this county deliver his funeral discourse. These two brothers grew up from boyhood with him, and had been associated with him more or less throughout his ministerial labors and they were much affected and somewhat handicapped in the talks by these ties and memories, however, their funeral tribute was in a high degree pathetic and fitting for the occasion. They spoke briefly of his great faith, of his earnestness of purpose, of his firm stand for the principles of righteousness and truth at any and all times, and of his unfaltering hope for immortal life. May his bereaved family and friends be comforted by these hopes, and all of us who read this short memorial, cultivate the worthy principles and share the celestial hopes of our dear deceased brother is the prayer of one who holds the name of Rev. D.A. Ledbetter in grateful remembrance. Written by Elihu N. Hall Taken from the Hardin County Independent, Hardin County, Illinois
