176 Acres Preserved For Future Generations
Over 176 acres of natural woodlands, comprising the southern end of Nevin Park lies largely untouched and unnoticed just minutes away from downtown Charlotte, NC.
Featuring four walking trails, three large ponds, free flowing creeks, a huge picnic area with tables under large shade trees and acres of forest probably not walked since the American Indians used this as their hunting ground.
Nestled in the forest is a stand of huge American Beech trees -- a slow growing tree of impressive stature. Eighty to 100 such trees make up the Treasure Grove at RibbonWalk, some of them over 200 years old. On site, a hand-hewn log cabin that dates back to the 1770's now stands and waits to be restored as a visitor's center. The ruins of another cabin, dating to 1820, is found along one trail; footings, chimney and remains of a double-seater outhouse from a more recent farmhouse stand close to another trail.
Originally conceived as the Charlotte Botanical Garden, Ribbonwalk has stepped out of the shadow of the multimillion dollar financed Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden (in Gastonia) and found its own niche --- natural woodland beauty. Visitors, students, youth groups, and naturalists come year-round to walk the trails and explore the site --- finding rare plants (some endangered), many species of birds and other wildlife.
