Colorado Close Up Citizenship Education Programs
                             About Colorado Close Up
Colorado Close Up is  a non-profit, non-partisan organization of volunteer educators that provides exciting opportunities for students in public and private  schools in grades 9-12 in Colorado to study the issues confronting the state, what the state government is doing about those issues and how they can get involved. Students meet with top officials from each branch of government. Each presenter conducts an engaging activity that helps students to understand the issues and what government can do about them. The program costs $225  which includes two nights in a Denver hotel, Denver Center for Performing Arts play tickets, curricular materials, and all meals except two lunches. No student has ever been rejected because of a lack of funds. Scholarships are normally available through a generous grant from the Colorado Bar Foundation and State Farm Insurance. The seminars are designed to help students meet both National and Colorado Civics and Gvernment Standards. Most participating students return to their communities and launch community service/service learning projects that make substantial sontributions to the quality of life in their areas. Sessions for 2006 are scheduled for Feb. 5-7, 12-14, 26- 28, March 5-7, and  12-14. Please join us in Denver. For additional information please contact new website: www.coloradocloseup.com

Partial Agenda
Learn how to interview powerful people --work with a journalist from a local TV station or local or national newspaper or news service.

What do lobbyists do -- Design a lobbying plan and try to lobby a legislator. A real lobbyist will  help you.

Have breakfast with your legislator.Small groups (7-9) of students and their legislators eat and talk while viewing Denver and the mountains from the 36th floor of a downtown skyscrapper.

My Political Position-- Tell other students where you stand on the hot issues and why. Where does this place you on the political spectrum? Which party is more likely to support your ideas?

Help the Governor -- Someone from the executive branch shares information about a recent decision they had to make to advise the governor about what he should do. What would you have told the governor and why?

Attend a play at the Denver Center for Performing  Arts.

Watch a real courtroom and meet with a lawyer who can answer questions you have about what you saw.

Simple debate -- share your ideas with other students and try to persuade them that your positions on the hottest isues in Colorado are correct.

And much much more!!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!!
Today's youth maintain the American tradition of having large hearts and wanting to make the world a better place, but like many adults they don't understand that virtually all problems have a public policy dimension -- that government makes decisions that influnce the morning shower they take (EPA Clean Water Standards), what they have for breakfast ( Food and Drug Administration) and when they can drive a car or are legally responsible for credit card debts. Government influences all of us, every day of our lives and if we don't participate in making those decisions someone else will and we may not like the choices they make. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Make the world a better place, know the issues and know how the system work so you can be an effective citizen. Be informed and be involved!
