My Mother's Family (The Cornish)
My mother, June Hancock, was one-half Cornish. Her family consisted of Cornish miners. During my research I have learned that although Cornwall is part of England, the people of Cornwall, considered themselves to be a distinct people.
The Cornish surnames are:
Kemp, Keverne, Morrish, Moyle, Rablin, Simmons, Tonkin, Tregonning,Truran
The Trurans
Grace Tregonning was the daughter of John Tregonning and Grace Bawden. She married Richard Truran November 6, 1819 at St. Agnes, Cornwall, England. They had seven children.
John Truran was their fourth child. John is found in Shullsberg, Wisconsin in the 1850 census. He was naturalized in 1853. John Truran married Jane Moyle November 27, 1855 in Grant County, Wisconsin. John Truran and Jane Moyle moved to Sutter Creek, California before 1858. They had three children. Isabella Clara Truran was the eldest daughter and my Great great grandmother.
The Moyles
Thomas Moyle married Elizabeth Kemp in 1827 in Gwennap, Cornwall. Elizabeth is found in the 1850 Lafayette County, Wisconsin census with four of her five children. She later moved to JoDaviess County, Illinois and remarried. Her second husband's name was Richard Bromley.
The Morrish
Joseph Bowden Morrish was born March 10, 1820 in Penryn, Cornwall. He married Mary Keverne. Mary was born in Cuny, Cornwall. They had a son named Joseph Bowden Morrish. He was born in Redruth, Cornwall. Joseph Bowden Morrish (the second) moved to Tuolumne County, California and married Maria Rablin. He later moved to Grass Valley, Nevada County, California.
The Rablins
William Henry Rablin was born in Tywardreath, Cornwall around 1820. He married Jane Tonkin. William and Jane Rablin moved to Tuolumne County, California around 1868. Maria Jane was their third child.
The Simmons
John Simmons married Frances Uren March 2, 1813 in Illogan, Cornwall. They had four children. Thomas Simmons was their second child. Thomas married Susan Willoughby October 29, 1836 in Illogan, Cornwall. Thomas and Susan moved to Lafayette County, Wisconsin before 1850. Thomas received his citizenship on May 4, 1848 in Grant County, Wisconsin.
In 1852 Thomas and Susan Simmons packed up their children and went by wagon train to California. They settled in Tuolumne County, California. Thomas Henry Simmons was their third child and my Great grandfather.
