4-FUN FOUR WHEELERS was formed in February 1981 and has a limited membership of 44 family members. Our members live all over the southeastern part of Michigan--from Lake Orion to Dearborn Heights, from Gregory to Holly, from Rochester Hills to Birch Run, Owosso and Mancelona, and lots of towns and cities in between. We also have honorary members in Ohio.
We started out as a mostly "drag/obstacle sand racers." Now our children (ages 8 to 15) are involved in Junior Racing participating in both drag and obstacle racing. For several years w were involved in "Rookie Racing" (ages 16-21). Several members have competed in short-course off-road racing and asphalt drag racing. There there are some members who don't race at all. Among us are members who take the best pictures ever!
The club gets together for meetings once a month October through May. We usually show up early to meet and greet and "catch up" from the last month. Then a business meeting is held, followed by a potluck dinner and more conversation to end the evening. There are a lot of great cooks in our club!
4-Fun has been very active in community service projects over the years. Some of the projects include--
* Helping needy families at Christmas (from gifts for a whole family to a full meal for their table)
* Collecting aluminum cans for the Whitefish School Fund
* Supporting the MIA-POW Public Awareness Program from Washington, DC
* Donating our Christmas decorations at Gravelrama
* Rasing over $6,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Western Wayne-Washtenaw counties
* Built a float and took two Make-A-Wish "kids" in the Plymouth 4th of July Parade and had a picnic for them and their families (which also included riding in one of our race vehicles)
* Participated when one of Ohio's "kids" was brought to Gravelrama for the weekend
* Continuing clothing donations to the needy through the Pontiac Rescue Mission
* Support St. Jude's Children Hospital for cancer research for kids
Our club is active in Michigan Off-Road Racing Association (MORRA). 4-Fun has members serving on the executive board, as well as on various committees and volunteer ositions. We have hosted the MORRA Summer Race and attend the MORRA conventions. It is well known that 4-Fun lives up to its name at the conventions (and anywhere else we may be)! We are always there to help out at the races, wherever we are needed--from security to registration to staging.
4-Fun is active in the East Coast 4-Wheel Drive Association (EC4WDA). 4-Fun has members serving on the executive boardd as well as various committees and volunteer positions. We have hosted the Hospitality Room at the bi-annual meetings. We participate at their races. One of the biggest East Coast races of the year is "Gravelrama" held in Ohio at the end of August with over 300 competitors! 4-Fun has brought innumerable trophies back to Michigan. Gravelrama presents a travelling trophy yearly to the club that wins the most trophies in the four fun-filled days. Our club has the record for taking that trophy--10 times!
This trophy is referred to as "The Big T." 4-Fun built a case for this trophy one year and another year put lights in the case. 4-Fun couples have also won the prestigious "His and Her Trophy" several times and 4-Fun has also brought home the "Best Engineered Vehicle Trophy." Along with that, 4-Fun has also won the "Fastest Time of Day Trophy" in drags, obstacle and both women and open competition. We won the Campground Trophy for the first 11 years (minus one). Included in our themes have been--Hawaiian Luau, Christmas, Las Vegas, Land Yachts, Carnival, Tacky, Amazing Gravel, Coming of Age (21) and Gravel's 25th Anniversary Down Memory Lane--"Above and Beyond."
4-Fun has had many members featured in the Four Wheel Drive magazines and newspapers. Several of our members have been on TV (TNN at Gravelrama), Fox Family "AXN TV" and ESPN. At one time one of our members put on several SODA/SCORE races which were shown on ESPN. Several 4-Fun members worked hard of those events and had lots of fun.
Our club is friendshisp oriented, and our motto could well be "We take care of our own." If one of our members needs help, anytime or anywhere, you will find 4-Funners there to lend a hand.
Our members are what true four wheelers should be--they are there to help, while having fun in the process. We have been called upon for amny things, and have always responded. We are always there in good times and bad.
In the years to come, our names and faces may change, but 4-FUN will always mean the same thing--friends getting together, doing what they do best--HAVING FUN.
